If you want to experience the unique flora of the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park up close, this is the tour for you. The tour is in the heart of the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park and it clearly shows what the young national park is all about. Ancient beech trees line the path, in the Ochsenbruch you can find out what a hillside moor is like, and on a walk in the meadow above the Forellenhof you can observe the osprey and black stork that make their home here.

The trail calls at any time of year: In winter, it is the view of the moor that presents itself most beautifully at this time of year. In spring, wild daffodils and daphne bloom, transforming nature into a sea of colour early in the year. Summertime is butterfly time on the meadows above the trout farm and in autumn there is hardly a better place to “lausten” (local term meaning “listen”) to the roaring of the stags during the rutting season.

Author’s recommendation

The end of September is the rutting season of the stags - on the Börfinker Ochsentour you can experience the roaring of the stags up close, depending on the time of day.

Tips and hints

Tourist Information Office for the Birkenfeld region, Friedrich-August-Straße 17, 55765 Birkenfeld, Tel.: 06782-9834570, www.birkenfelder-land.de

The Börfinker-Ochsentour is one of 114 dream loops, the premium circular hiking trails in Hunsrück. Further information and all other dream loops can be found at www.saar-hunsrueck-steig.de

We are located in the middle of the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park.

Information on the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park and the national park region, dream loops in the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park and many activity offers can be found in compiled form at www.nationalparkregion-hunsrueck-hochwald.de

Information for dog owners:

Level of difficulty: easy, little tarmac, many narrow paths, well suited for an adventurous dog walk over uneven terrain

Distracting stimuli: Over the course of the Börfinker-Ochsentour, country or district roads have to be crossed from time to time, roads can sometimes be heard, but this does not detract from the hiking experience.  There is a medium volume of hikers on the premium trail, so you should expect to encounter oncoming hikers.

Water/shade: The Börfinker-Ochsentour leads mainly through wooded terrain. Direct access to water is available at various points on the route.

Rubbish bins/cleanliness: On the Börfinker-Ochsentour, the principle of “what you take on the trail goes home with you” is applied as far as possible. There are only rubbish bins available at selected points. The waste from dogs and humans should not be left on/along the trail so that the enjoyment of the trail is maintained for all

Hiking car park between Börfink and Thranenweier on the K49

Turn-by-turn directions

When you start at the hikers’ car park on the K 49, let yourself be taken back in time - and to a piece of world history in the Hunsrück. The car park can then be found directly on the edge of the former Erwin Nato bunker. It is hard to imagine what role this would have played in the Cold War in the worst case scenario...

But now the tour can really get going - through the forest and a little way along the Traunbach stream. The trail goes up through a beautiful mixed forest to the “Gure Bure”. The legend of this healing spring, romantically situated in the forest, is told here. It isalso a beautiful location for a first rest. Downhill along a pretty meadow where a special spectacle is on display every year in autumn: at the time of the deer rut, locals traditionally go here to “listen to the deer” - do the same when you come along here in the evening and look forward to a true concert of the rutting cries of our largest forest dwellers.

Arriving at the crossroads, a detour to Börfink is recommended: Just after 200 metres, you will reach the Alte Mühle country inn, which caters for the hiker's appetite with full meals or snacks.

The trail continues along the Traun and finally meets the second dream loop in this area, the Trauntal-Heights-Trail. From here it is only a few metres to the Forellenhof, the second restaurant on the route. A visit here is also interesting because of the large fish farm, the many other animals withinthe grounds and - every year in spring - the visit of the ospreys, which feed here until they are full. The birds can be observed ideally from the Forellenhof, special guided tours are offered.

The Börfinker-Ochsentour now continues for a few metres on the Trauntal-Heights-Path, through the common portal the trail heads uphill.

It goes uphill for about 300m through a spruce forest. After that, the Börfinker-Ochsentour separates to the right and now follows part of the long-distance hiking trail “Saar-Hunsrück-Trail”.  The hike continues over large stepping stones across the Hengstbach stream and further along the edge of the forest to the heights.

The trail continues across an open meadow with a view of the fish breeding ponds of the trout farm, where you have the opportunity to take a break with a view of the Hengstbach Valley. After crossing the road, continue across a meadow section to the edge of the forest. (Here, there is again the chance to use an access road to the “Zur Alten Mühle” inn).

It goes up the beech forest with a slight ascent. Once at Ochsenbruch, an extensive hillside moor, there is again the opportunity for an extended rest - simply let nature wash over you and slow down. The Ochsenbruch is one of the typical Hunsrück quarries. Entry is prohibted, as numerous strictly protected plants and rare animals have one of their last refuges here. The moor and its importance for people are explained at the rest area. Here, a footbridge runs across the moor - wonderful views and dry hiking boots on this passage are therefore guaranteed.

Now it is just under two kilometres back to the car park. The path runs through a beautiful stand of beech trees, followed by large, old spruce trees, a torrent rippl into the valley...

Enjoy peace and quiet and lots of nature on this hike, which, by the way, largely runs through the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park.
