This eventful hike begins with a short stretch along the Maikammer grape variety trail. On information boards you can learn a lot of interesting facts about different grape varieties. Continue over old cobblestones to the Klausental hut and then along a forest path uphill, on partly small paths, to the Hohe Loog Haus. Then steadily downhill, with a stop at the atonement cross, to Hambach Castle with an exhibition well worth seeing. Now leisurely in the direction of Zeter Berghaus and back to the car park.

This hike was made available to us by OutdoorWelten scout Petra Doehl.

Turn-by-turn directions

The circular route begins by going downhill from the car park and immediately left towards the north along the asphalted path. On the right side of the path there are information boards that inform about the grape varieties grown there. After a few metres there is a large picnic area with several seating areas, one of which has a fantastic view. Continue straight ahead and Hambach Castle in view, makes a very nice photo motif. After the pavement changes to cobblestones, the path ends at a small driveway that leads to the Klausental hut. We take this path to the left and shortly before the hut we come to forest soil. Past the hut, after just under 1 km, we turn right onto a small serpentine path. After a few bends, the path meets another path, which we follow uphill, keeping to the left. Now follow this narrow path, which crosses two wider paths, until you reach the Bildbaum. Turn right here and follow the Palatinate Wine Trail (white-red wave) to Hohe Loog Haus. After a possible rest, the descent begins. Descend on a narrow sandy path through a pine forest to Hambach Castle. Before reaching Hambach Castle, it is worth taking a short detour to the Sühnekreuz. This is rewarded with a very beautiful view and there is also a nice place to rest. Back on the main path, you walk past old tree trunks and moss-covered stones to the Rittersberg castle tavern. On the opposite side, Hambach Castle stands on a hill. A visit to the exhibition is worthwhile. Then continue on the other side of the road. A narrow path leads past the Zeter Berghaus and back to the Klausental, i.e. from here follow the signs for the Keschdeweg (green chestnut). So behind the Klausental hut idyllically along the small stream into the vineyards until you reach the Deutsche Weinstraße hiking trail at the rainwater retention basin. Now turn right and after a little more than ½ km we are back at the starting point.te
