Mosel Cycle Path Section 4: From Mehring to Piesport
The Neumagen Wine Ship, Roman wine cellars and numerous vineyards are perfect for short breaks.
easy
Distance 25.4 km
The Moselle Cycle Route loops and winds from Mehring to the wine-making village of Piesport on this fourth leg, always along the right bank of the Moselle. You will come across one of the most beautiful and well-known sections of the route between Leiwen and Trittenheim, before reaching Neumagen-Dhron, Germany’s oldest wine-making town and where the Neumagen Wine Ship was discovered. This grave carving, made for a Roman wine merchant, can be viewed in front of the Peterskapelle (St. Peter's Chapel) and a floating replica is anchored in a specially built harbour. Located just before Piesport, the faithfully restored wine cellars bear witness to the central importance the town had in terms of Roman wine production. The largest Roman wine cellar ever discovered north of the Alps is worth taking a short break for, before sampling the taste of the famous “Piesporter Goldtröpfen” wine in one of the hospital wineries there.
Author’s recommendation
A trip on the Neumagen Wine ship offers the opportunity to see the Moselle from a completely different perspective.
