Veldenz Castle and Veldenz Tower
Veldenz Castle is located in the small Palatine town of Lauterecken and is considered a cultural monument. It is located at Veldenzplatz 1. The castle, with its characteristic Veldenz Tower, was first mentioned in 1343. In the course of the early sixteenth century, it was virtually rebuilt and at the end of that century it was extended to form the new building; the latter is located at Schlossgasse 1.
The guildhall and the barn were rebuilt in 1803 and 1804. Both have been preserved to this day. The cellar of the castle is built in the late Gothic style. Veldenz Tower used to be part of the circular wall surrounding the castle.
At the mouth of the rivers Glan and Lauter lies the pretty Veldenz town of Lauterecken, where the Counts of Palatinate-Veldenz once resided. Count Palatine Georg Hans and Swedish Princess Anna von Wasa were the most notable royal couple of the Wittelsbach dynasty, which died out in 1694. In addition to Lauterecken, they had residences in Veldenz an der Mosel, Lützelstein and on Remigiusberg. The castle, of which only its late Gothic cellar with cross-ribbed vaulting and part of the circular wall with a watchtower (Veldenz Tower) are preserved, stood on the site of a moated valley castle, which was probably built in the 11th century. At the beginning of the 16th century, the castle was rebuilt as a palace under Count Palatine Ruprecht. Following the transition to the Electoral Palatinate, it became the guildhall of the Lauterecken district authority and was rebuilt around 1750 on top of the old cellar (today's main building). After French Revolutionary troops severely damaged the building, treasurer Johann Carl Falciola bought the property at auction and repaired it. It was not until 1980 that the entire complex was gradually transferred from private to municipal ownership and was renovated and restored both inside and out.
