Not far from Manderscheid is the 850-year-old Himmerod Cistercian Abbey in the Salm Valley. As soon as you walk through the gate to the abbey, you will forget space and time.
The first glance is at the monastery church. A long straight line leads directly to the inside of this imposing building. The view goes into a wide, high church room with an impressive vault. A simple wooden cross hangs in the centre of the sanctuary which is directly illuminated by the sun through the side windows. The power that this church expresses in its simplicity is impressive. Right next door is the Chapel of Mercy – a place that contrasts with the large church. Light is provided only by a small window above the entrance and the many candles lit here by the faithful. If you are alone in the chapel and nothing disturbs the silence, you are often lucky enough to hear quiet organ music of the Klais Organ, which is located in the large church. The little wooden altar with the Blessed Mother and baby Jesus asks you to simply unload the worries of everyday life here. You can also visit the book and art shop, the museum “Alte Mühle”, the monastery restaurant, the monastery fishery and the monastery gardening, all located on the monastery grounds.
