Ebernburg Castle, one of the most famous castles in the Palatinate, rises picturesquely on a promontory above the village of Ebernburg above a romantic landscape with castles, mountains, forests, river courses and vineyards.

The Ebernburg Castle is enthroned on a hill high above the Bad Münster am Stein district. It dominates the town and landscape. The castle can be reached on foot on a stairway or by car, whereby one must cross the village. Once you reach the top, the entire wealth of the landscape opens up to the observer. There you can see the mighty Rotenfels (Red Rock) steep face, formed of solidified magma, the village of Ebernburg, which nestles around the castle hill, the Nahe weir with the rock formation of the Rheingrafenstein and to the south-east as far as the chain of hills on which the Altenbaumburg Castle can be seen. The Ebernburg was probably more than 200 years old when it came into the possession of the von Sickingen family, where it remained until they died out in 1768. The most famous name from the von Sickingen family association - the knightly leader Franz von Sickingen, made the castle famous in the time of the Reformation. He granted protection to early followers of the Reformation and waged war - unsuccessfully - against spiritual and secular princes. He paid for this with his life. The castle was destroyed, rebuilt, expanded into a fortress, repeatedly besieged and captured and finally blown up in 1698. This was a demand for peace from the French at the end of the War of Palatinate Succession. The history of the castle took a new beginning when a gastronomer took it over in the 19th century and built new buildings. In 1914, the Ebernburg Protestant Foundation acquired the estate to preserve the memory of the early days of the Reformation. But the castle was destroyed for the third time - this time in 1944/45 by bombs. And again it was rebuilt. Today it is a Christian hotel for family holidays and educational work. Also guests are always welcome. The castle is an ideal starting point for hikes, because well-signposted hiking trails connect here. An exhibition vividly explains the history of the castle. The mighty shield wall of the medieval castle has been preserved, and is adjoined by the gate, which can be reached via a bridge. In the courtyard there is a 56 metre deep well. Stone coats of arms remind us of the noble families who once resided here. After visiting the castle, it is advisable to descend a stairway to the castle village, where there are several opportunities to enjoy a good glass of wine from the local winegrower in the tranquil atmosphere of an inn or estate.
