The village Eisenschmitt was the template for Clara Viebig’s first novel “Das Weiberdorf”, which was published in 1900. It describes life in a village at that time: The men went to the Ruhr area in order to earn money there. The women stayed there and had to do all work in the village, including those that usually do the men. The title of the book is derived from this fact.
Clara Viebig was born in Trier and got to know the Eifel from there, the beauty of which she was inspired by. She wrote other books that play in the wild landscape. In the Clara-Viebig-Centre in Eisenschmitt you will find a documentary about the history of Eisenschmitt as well as an exhibition about the life and work of Clara Viebig, known today as the “Eifel poet”.
