Forum ALTE POST

The cultural centre Forum ALTE POST in Pirmasens was originally the Royal Bavarian Post Office built in 1893 by the architect Ludwig Stempel (1850–1917). The municipal parcel service and the telegraph service were run there until 1927. Following the construction of a new post office, the building in the heart of the West Palatinate city served as a telecommunications and post-bus office and in 1930 it was considered one of the largest post-bus service bases in Germany. Until its closure in 1976, the Alte Post served as a waiting room for postal bus passengers, a telephone exchange and a post-bus office. The monument now radiates new splendour thanks to extensive reconstruction, technical modernisation and fundamental restoration, during which a mosaic on the outer façade was restored in line with historical models. With its multifunctional rooms, Forum ALTE POST offers space for exhibitions, concerts and events, as well as for seminars and private celebrations. There are firmly established installations in Forum ALTE POST paying tribute to two famous sons from the city. One of these is the permanent exhibition "Heinrich Bürkel - Landpartie" (Heinrich Bürkel - Country outing) with a total of 60 paintings, drawings and sketches by the famous romantic painter Heinrich Bürkel (1802–1869). On the other hand, the Hugo Ball Cabinet presents itself as an interactive permanent exhibition about the founder of Dada, Hugo Ball (1886–1927).
