Historischer Steinbruch "Ahl" bei St. Johann
The historic quarry "Ahl" is located south of the municipality of St. Johann in the Vordereifel. The imposing rock forest rises steeply north of the Nettetal and is visible from afar due to its yellowish colour. The term "Ahl" is Germanic and means "protection, construction or house".
The "Ahl" originated about 400,000 years ago at the eruption of the Hochsimmer volcano, when a huge glowing lava flow buried the urtal of the river "Nette" under it. In the lava walls up to 40 meters high, the outflow of two streams into the Nettetal becomes clear, which led to a unique column formation of the lava and bizarre rock formations due to different cooling conditions. The crevices and scooping out in the rock are today home to rare animal and plant species.
