Timber drifting required an ingenious system of channels and water reservoirs on small bodies of water. All water bodies had to be accessible so that the drifters could quickly reach all places with their hooked poles in order to loosen wedged timber. Only then was the temporary water wave exploited to the maximum.
Damage to the walls shows that wood was also thrown in shortly before the mouth of the Speyerbach, but probably not systematically.
