On  August 1st 1925, the exhibition grounds opened in the east of the city with a Palatine handicrafts exhibition. Older Kaiserslauterners still call it the "exhibition" when they mean the Volkspark. Today, where once three halls stood, there is a green area with a duck pond and the fleet for the Technische Werke (technical facilities). The former exhibition grounds have had on an eventful past. A large pond was created and the facility was topped off by a fountain, which was in turn flanked by the statues of two horse-tamers. Several columns next to the swan pond recall the former bandstand. A major attraction at the time was the radio system, as well as the 70,000-square-meter area for dance and wine tents, booths and pavilions.
About 10 years later, a deer park and a pheasant- and goose-breeding facility were built – whilst trout and goldfish frolicked in the pond. An air raid in 1945 reduced the halls to rubble; one "horse-tamer" survived the bombing and can still be seen today. In the spring of 1959 work on the exhibition grounds began – under its new name "Volkspark". Today, this romantic park is a not just destination for a walk surrounded by nature, but its Sunday brunchtime concerts also provide a further counterpoint to the City's cultural diversity.
