Bockenau, which lies sheltered and surrounded by steep cliffs in the Ellerbach and Gräfenbach valleys, was once served by a small railway. From 1896 to 1935, trains ran steamily through the village and provided a connection to Bad Kreuznach, for reasons of cost on a narrow gauge. Today, the former narrow-gauge railway is part of a cycle path through the Soonwald Nahe Nature Park. It runs in sections along the former tracks of the narrow-gauge railway and overcomes the watershed between Allenfeld and Argenschwang over a range of hills. The starting and finishing point of the circular cycle route through the Rüdesheim / Nahe community can be, for example, the small railway museum in Bockenau, where a lock from 1920 is on display. The trail is scenic and runs away from the central development routes of the Nahe valley. It is 34 kilometres long and has ascents of 330 metres in altitude, which are rewarded with beautiful views towards the Soonwald.

Author’s recommendation

Take enough to drink and rest at the small railway museum in Bockenau. Or at other beautiful spots along the way!

Turn-by-turn directions

Requirements: Athletic strength or pushing required on the uphill section, otherwise suitable for all. The two co-guided sections without a cycle path clearly reduce the quality as a family-friendly cycle route, especially as the 2.8 km long section on the L238 between Allenfeld and Argenschwang has a steep difference in altitude of 115 m over a length of 2.4 km.

Route character:

Routing:

25 km own paths

2 km cycle paths

6.5 km in town without cycle path

3.5 km without cycle path (0.5 km L 108 before Bockenau and 3 km L 238 Allenfeld - Argenschwang)

Pavement quality:    Fully asphalted routes

The route in the cycle path network: The Kleinbahn cycle route connects the local region with the southern Soonwald in the Soonwald-Nahe Nature Park.
