The cycle tour begins at Domplatz in Speyer. Continue through Dudenhofen forest, heading west along the Waldgraben tributary and Speyerbach river to pass the Holiday Park and Speyerdorf as you make your way to Neustadt.  The route is very easy as it runs entirely on flat paths.

Author’s recommendation

Short, basic tour that is also suitable for children. Speyer is packed with places to visit, including the imperial cathedral, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with museums. Other attractions include the Technik Museum Speyer, the Historical Museum of the Palatinate and the SEA LIFE Speyer aquarium. The old town of Neustadt an der Weinstraße is the perfect place to take a break, while anyone with energy to spare can link up with the German Wine Cycle Route.

Turn-by-turn directions

Your tour starts with the imposing cathedral behind you, and the cobbles of Maximilianstraße ahead. Cycle along the traffic-calmed Maximilianstraße to the Altpörtel, one of the city gates, and pass underneath it. Immediately afterwards, turn right into Mühlturmstraße at Postplatz. After the railway crossing, turn right again into Holzstraße and follow the Speyerbach tributary out of the city. The route initially takes you past Dudenhofen cycling club. The German cyclist Rudi Altig used to train on the cycle track on Iggelheimer Straße. The route continues through the Gäu, a flat landscape criss-crossed by streams, in the direction of the Wine Route. To the north of Lachen-Speyerdorf, the cycle route shares a small section of the Kraut und Rüben Cycle Route, before the latter turns south. The route then continues alongside the Speyerbach and Rehbach rivers into Neustadt. First continue along Harthäuserweg, then turn left into Robert-Stolz-Straße and then left again onto Martin-Luther-Straße. At the second street, turn right into Konrad-Adenauer-Straße, which leads into the town centre. Continue along Kellereistraße to Marktplatz, where you can take a break at one of the cosy cafés or restaurants. The town hall and Stiftskirche church are both well worth a visit. The route now continues along Rathausstraße. At the end, turn left into Sauterstraße. Continue on Wolfsburgstraße and then take a left into Würzmühle. Follow the B39 (Talstraße) as it leaves the town. Just before you reach Lambrecht, turn left into Wiesenstraße. After one kilometre, turn right into Fabrikstraße, where the cycle route rejoins the B39 (Hauptstraße). We follow this for just a short distance before turning right into Bahnhofstraße. We reach our destination after a short climb.
