The river Salm winds from the Himmerod Abbey to its confluence into the Moselle near Klüsserath, exclusively through the Moseleifel region. The Salm Cycle Trail connects the Maare-Moselle Cycle Trail in Wittlich and the Moselle Cycle Trail in Klüsserath. It runs through the geological formation “Wittlicher Senke” and includes sections of the Wittlicher Senke Cycle Trail. It continues to follow the Salm Valley up to Klüsserath, past fields and meadows, and from Rivenich, it runs through the vineyards of the Moselle region. As a route that embraces rural culture it includes the castle in Dreis, churches and mills well worth seeing, farmhouses in the style of Trier “house block” and other regional characteristics such as e.g. wineries in the wine region.

Places of interest along the route:

  • Dreis: The Baroque church of St. Martin
  • Dreis: Dreis Castle
  • Salmtal: Salm mill, Dörbach village
  • Sehlem: Village square
  • Sehlem: Parish church
  • Sehlem: Old school
  • Esch: Church
  • Esch: Mill
  • Esch: Village square
  • Rivenich: Church and rectory
  • Rivenich: Wine Museum
  • Klüsserath: former Electorate of Trier Castle
  • Klüsserath: Echternacher Hof
  • Klüsserath: Village square
  • Klüsserath: Parish church

Author’s recommendation

In the villages along the connecting route between the Maare-Mosel Cycle Path and the Mosel Cycle Path, it is worth getting off the track. Exciting village stories with numerous historic buildings and charming beer or cattle gardens invite you to linger.

Requirements:  The Salm Cycle Trail is - at last from Dreis to the Moselle - suitable for everyone and is only a little demanding from the Moselle Valley up to the top.

Profile:  The route mainly runs through level terrain along the Salm; there is a short ascent (150 m long / 50 m ascent) directly after Rivenich. The cycle trail is also suitable, with a few limitations, for children and for bicycle trailers and tandems.

Course:  Outside of towns, on farm roads; inside of towns, on roads without cycle lanes.

Surface quality:  All paths are paved.

The route in the cycle trail network:  The Salm Cycle Trail is a regional network addition between the Moselle Cycle Trail and the Wittlicher Senke Cycle Trail.
