This round trip of 17 km impresses with an alternation between dense mixed forests and quiet, open valley meadows. A bathing lake (Fleckensteiner Weiher) invites you to linger as well as the beautiful villages.

This somewhat more challenging round trip leads uphill and downhill through charming villages on the French and German sides – so "hiwwe and driwwe". The tour starts on the French side and leads past the "Fleckensteiner Weiher" and the "Schönauer Weiher" – both offer bathing opportunities. The tour leads through picturesque meadow valleys and through the Palatinate Forest/Northern Vosges Nature Park Biosphere Reserve. Very varied and also different are the respective villages hiwwe as driwwe through which this round trip leads.

UFFBASSE! - Campaign for a considerate coexistence in nature

Always be forward-looking, friendly and considerate of everyone you meet along the way.

Pay attention to nature, do not destroy plants and always stay on the trails.

Think of a garbage bag on the go and take waste back home.

Please always keep your dog on a leash. Other visitors and animals thank you.

For your own safety, keep in mind any roadblocks. Also on weekends.

Park only in designated parking spaces. Leave room for escape routes and agricultural machinery.

Please give priority to agricultural and forestry transport.

Safety information

Often our cycling routes run along paths on which we are guests by bike and which we share with others. We therefore ask for a considerate and friendly cooperation at all times. Farmers and foresters use the farm roads through fields and forests for their everyday work (even on weekends) and therefore always have priority.

Due to work assignments and/or weather conditions, these paths can also be more polluted at times. Special care should also be taken when guided along the (mostly quiet and little-used) roads in and around the Alsatian and Palatinate villages.

Turn-by-turn directions

From Schönau, the tour leads on a flat asphalted cycle path to the border community of Hirschtal. We continue through mixed forest until we reach the Fleckensteiner pond, here you can cool off in the bathing lake. The varied cycle path leads past the campsite and then the Ferme du Froensbourg until we reach the picturesque half-timbered village of Niedersteinbach/F.

Here the tour continues on the D3 until we turn right onto the D190, direction Wengelsbach. Now it goes steeply uphill to the Col du Götzenberg, then the tour leads downhill until we reach the small village of Wengelsbach/F. From the Wengelsbach/F, an asphalted cycle path now leads slightly downhill through an idyllic forest back to the starting point Schönau.
