Author’s recommendation

The Remigius Wanderweg is named after Saint Remigius, the Bishop of Rheims, as is the   Remigius Church, part of a monastery complex of the former Benedictine provost St. Remigii on the Remigiusberg. The region is also known as Remigiusland   after being given to the diocese of Rheims by the Franconian King Childebert II .

A visit to the family vault of the Counts of Veldenz is possible all year round by appointment.

An extended visit to the wildlife park "Potzberg" and Greifvogelzoo should not be missed whilst walking the trail. Covering an area of about 30 ha you will be able to see ibexes, sika and red deer, fallow deer and mouflons, elks, wild boars and wild horses. There is also a breeding station for more than 120 birds of prey and a children’s zoo. A round tour of 4 kilometres takes you around the park followed by a free-span wooden bridge leading to the grandstand in front of the central feeding area.

The bird’s air show, daily at 15.00 hrs, is with eagles, vultures and falcons   - at the weekend   children can also participate.

On request, the air show can be held in English.

Turn-by-turn directions

Even if the actual trail starts a few hundred meters further on - we recommend the railway station in Kusel as your starting point. You can arrive by train every hour, ample parking is also available.

The feeder path is marked with the yellow "R" - the trail marker for the Remigius Wanderweg.   After about 800 m we reach a small pond near the   "Winterhelle" and start on the Remigius Wanderweg

leading us through dense forest, passing a forest classroom and   the Rübezahlbank. Its name is derived from its size but it is there for use by every hiker. Many deciduous trees, including gnarled redwoods, characterize the woods next to the road. We then reach the hill in Haschbach and are already rewarded with the views of the Remigiusberg with its monastery Probstei St. Remigii, built in 1019 and the ruined Michelsburg Castle. Via a short detour the monastery and castle ruins can be easily reached and visited.

We continue our journey by going down into the old stone quarry between Haschbach and Theisberstegen with its deep insight into the history of the geological diversity of the region. An information board can be seen at the quarry site which bridges the gap between history and today's geological use.

The Quarry Museum Rammelsbach is located nearby and is easy to reach by following the marked feeder path - visit by appointment on tel: 06381/424 270 .

From Remigiusberg we then descend into the Glantal towards Theisbergstegen. Here at the stork park of the Storchenfreunde Glantal you can watch the numerous storks at home here. Most of the birds live here all the year round giving birth to many young storks (more information:

In Theisbergstegen there are several opportunities for rest and refreshment as well as a train stop. Just behind the village at the Buchenwald hütte (open only on Sundays), we start the climb up through the landscape conservation area "Potzberg". Passing by the remains of the Altenburg the trail leads steadily uphill through a wonderful forest landscape. At the water source, named by the local inhabitants as the yellow water spring, one should not fill one’s water bottle: the yellow colour - washed out of the iron ore of the former quarry - colours your fingers, shoes and paper   tissues - ideally suited for experiments - recognizably yellow.

The path passes the "Dreieckigenstein", a border stone marking the boundaries of the three local regions of Gimsbach, Theisbergstegen and Ruthweiler am Glan.

Once on the summit, we make a short detour to the lookout tower (562 metres) on the Potzberg. The view over the Palatine Highlands towards the Donnersberg and Kaiserslautern is impressive. You should not miss a visit to the wildlife park Potzberg with its unique bird-flying show. The rustic log cabins of this wildlife park are also ideal for a comfortable rest.
