English travellers often believed in ghosts and loved gothic horror – and they certainly found plenty to inspire them during their travels along the Rhine: seven rocks which today rise from the water near Oberwesel at low tide are said to once have been seven drowned maidens. Mysticism and fairy tales accompany you on your way to Maria Ruh, where you can enjoy the most beautiful view of the Loreley.

Turn-by-turn directions

Climbing adventure on the Rhine!

From the lovely old town of Oberwesel, climb up to the Elfenley where you meet the RheinBurgenWeg once again. Cross the back of the Oberbach Valley to reach the rear ramparts of Oberwesel. Follow the imposing wall to the Church of St. Martin and then leave the town behind you. Surrounded by vineyards, a decision is now called for: the route makes a detour here high up to the Günderodehaus (the detour takes in the Sculpture Trail and meets the main route higher up). However, those seeking a more thrilling adventure can take the Oelsberg via ferrata which leads right through the middle of the steep slope. You have to cope with ladders and footholds and a cliff offers a resting place for a well-earned pause to catch your breath. The climbing thrill ends far too quickly and the Sculpture Trail ends at a lodge in the midst of the vineyards. The path becomes more varied now, passing through hedges and woodland along the edge of the slope and encounters the next highlight of the day at Urbar: the Maria Ruh viewpoint probably offers the best view of the Loreley rock opposite and numerous benches, including a swing bench, encourage you to take a rest and linger awhile!

With a spring in your step after this break, head off into the forest and downhill into the Galgenbach Valley. The climb back up to the top starts at the fork where the path heads to "An der Loreley" to the B9. A little breathless, cross the Seelenbach Valley and finally return to the Rhine plateau where the edge of the slope affords a breathtaking panorama. From here, you even have a great view of the Loreley figure below on the breakwater in the Rhine. It's only a short distance to the extended resting place at the Kretschhütte lodge close to the district of Biebernheim above St. Goar. The descent through the wild and romantic Lohbach Valley is once again rather steep. Walking down a series of step to reach the bottom, you now leave the RheinBurgenWeg and follow the path past the railway station to the centre of St. Goar close by.

Public transport
