If the weather got too warm for the residents of Wiesbaden, they took a stroll along the Rhine to Biebrich Castle. Goethe celebrated his 56th birthday in this splendid building and enjoyed the park, where each year during Pentecost the elite riders of the show jumping and dressage world meet. During the rest of the year the park belongs to the locals and the hikers, as the Rheinsteig trail begins on the terrace of the Baroque building. Let the adventure begin!

Safety information

Health and safety
  • Wear suitable weatherproof clothing that will protect you from cold, wet, heat and sunshine.
  • Make sure you take regular breaks and don't overexert yourself.
  • Take enough fluids with you as there are sections without rest stops.
  • Wear suitable hiking boots/shoes which give you enough grip on slippery, steep, rocky and uneven surfaces.
  • Avoid any sections of the route which you feel are too difficult for you. Natural trails can quickly become wet and slippery in adverse weather conditions.
  • Particularly in autumn, you should be careful of uneven ground, roots, stones or holes that have been covered by leaves.
  • You need to take these kinds of adverse conditions into account every time you go on a hike.
  • Particularly steep and dangerous places are made safer with handrails or ropes. Please use these as safety aids. Handrails are not to be climbed on or used to get a better view!

Turn-by-turn directions

The trail follows the river to the dam at Schierstein port, where the Dyckerhoff bridge crosses the water and leads back to the 'mainland'. It continues northwards over the old B42 district road along the banks of the Lindenbach to the train and motorway underpasses. Don't worry – as soon as we reach the Frauenstein vineyard district, we leave the noise of the traffic behind us and finally arrive in nature.

The trail winds its way through the rows of vines first to the Nürnberger Hof restaurant and then to the Goethestein monument, a striking stone column which has commemorated Goethe's visit to this spot since the 100th anniversary of the master poet's death (1932). The trail continues over the crest of the Spitzen Stein rock to Frauenstein Castle in the eponymous Wiesbaden suburb. From here, there is a short ascent through thickets to Sommerberg Castle. The trail then descends into the Erlenbach Valley, where a continuous ascent to the Monstrazenbaum natural monument begins. A tree root-strewn path leads to the Grauen Stein rock and the Ludwig-Schwenk hikers' hut. From here, it's not far to the outskirts of the Schlangenbad district of Georgenborn and down into the Wallufbach Valley to the Lochmühle mill. Walk up the valley for a short distance and you will soon reach Schlangenbad, where this stage of the trail ends.
