The timber rafting riverside town of Kaub is best known for the Pfalzgrafenstein Fortress, which rises majestically from the river bank of this wine-growing town. The fortress almost looks like a stone ship which has just dropped anchor here. Alongside Marksburg Castle, Pfalzgrafenstein is the only castle on the Middle Rhine that was never destroyed. The fortress sits on a small island which emerges from the river and was used by General 'Vorwärts' Blücher in the pursuit of Napoleon's troops on New Year's Eve 1813/1814 during his legendary crossing of the Rhine.

Author’s recommendation

In der Saison kann man im Niedertal (dort verläuft die Grenze zwischen Rheinland-Pfalz und Hessen) beim Grenzvogt mitten im Wald einkehren.

Safety information

Health and safety
  • Wear suitable weatherproof clothing that will protect you from cold, wet, heat and sunshine.
  • Make sure you take regular breaks and don't overexert yourself.
  • Take enough fluids with you as there are sections without rest stops.
  • Wear suitable hiking boots/shoes which give you enough grip on slippery, steep, rocky and uneven surfaces.
  • Avoid any sections of the route which you feel are too difficult for you. Natural trails can quickly become wet and slippery in adverse weather conditions.
  • Particularly in autumn, you should be careful of uneven ground, roots, stones or holes that have been covered by leaves.
  • You need to take these kinds of adverse conditions into account every time you go on a hike.
  • Particularly steep and dangerous places are made safer with handrails or ropes. Please use these as safety aids. Handrails are not to be climbed on or used to get a better view!

Turn-by-turn directions

Starting from the train station, follow the street which leads to the Volkenbach Valley. After the first steep section, the Rheinsteig trail veers left and stops just in front of Gutenfels Castle, without actually entering it. Next stop is the Rennseiterstollen tunnel, where the trail crosses the Volkenbach Valley and ascends to the Schenkelbach Valley. You need to be careful not to miss the trail here, otherwise it will take you some time to find your way back to the slopes of the Rhine. Below an altitude of 293 the ‘Paul-Claus’ path veers off and brings you on a winding path down into the Niederthal Valley. Here you could once see the gallows of the Mainz and Palatinate High Courts, which greeted each other eerily from opposite sides of the valley. A noticeboard created by the border guard of Niederthal and a guest book for you to record your impressions of the area can be found here. Leaving the narrow valley, which marks the border between Rhineland-Palatinate and Hesse, the trail leads around the bottom of the Scheibigkopf hill and back onto the slopes of the Rhine Valley. Don't miss the turn-off for the Wirbellay viewing point – there is a magnificent view of Bacharach from the rocky viewing platform. Next stop is the Chapel of St Clement in the vineyards above Lorchhausen. From here on the trail remains in the vineyards and passes the ruins of Nollig Castle before entering the Wisper Valley and ending at Lorch.

Getting home: follow the footpaths to the train station.
