We follow the Grünbach Valley out of the village and towards some fields, from where you walk over the Honigberg hill to Eberbach Abbey. The former Cistercian abbey is one of the best preserved monastery sites in Europe and one of the jewels of Germany' history of wine. From Eberbach, you can continue on foot or take the bus to Hattenheim.

Founded by Burgundian Cistercian monks in 1136 in a quiet, wooded valley, Eberbach Abbey quickly developed into the largest wine-producing enterprise of its time. Wine has been produced and sold here for the last 800 years. The abbey became internationally recognised as the setting for the monastic thriller The Name of the Rose. Eberbach is also the most famous concert venue of the Rheingau Music Festival.

Safety information

Health and safety
  • Wear suitable weatherproof clothing that will protect you from cold, wet, heat and sunshine.
  • Make sure you take regular breaks and don't overexert yourself.
  • Take enough fluids with you as there are sections without rest stops.
  • Wear suitable hiking boots/shoes which give you enough grip on slippery, steep, rocky and uneven surfaces.
  • Avoid any sections of the route which you feel are too difficult for you. Natural trails can quickly become wet and slippery in adverse weather conditions.
  • Particularly in autumn, you should be careful of uneven ground, roots, stones or holes that have been covered by leaves.
  • You need to take these kinds of adverse conditions into account every time you go on a hike.
  • Particularly steep and dangerous places are made safer with handrails or ropes. Please use these as safety aids. Handrails are not to be climbed on or used to get a better view!

Turn-by-turn directions

You can reach the world famous Steinberg, the Eberbach monks' showcase vineyard, from the west side of the abbey car park. From here, the trail ascends steadily to the Unkenbaum, a centuries-old oak tree that was felled in a storm in September 2001. The trail then brings us down to the Sparngrund nature reserve, continues to the Leimersbach Valley and then ascends to the Susberg (lit. the mountain where pigs wallow).

At the bottom of the mountain the trail meets the Rhine District Riesling Route and follows it to Phillipsburg hunting lodge and car park. Nearby, you can watch members of a local model plane club flying their machines on the Kerbesberg mountain. From here, it's not far on the 'Flötenweg' path ('Flöte' describes the shape of a wine bottle used in the Rhine District) to Kühnsmühle guesthouse.

Next stop is Vollrads Castle, which nestles in a hollow in the Winkel vineyards and, with its 800-year-old tradition of wine-producing, is one of the most famous vineyards in the world. Vollrads Castle is also a venue for the Rheingau Music Festival and a haven for wine-related events. The path to Johannisberg Castle was popular with Goethe and with tourists today. The Rheinsteig trail doesn't lead straight to the castle however, turning into the Ansbach Valley in the direction of the woods instead. Walk through the nearby meadow to get to the world famous Johannisberg Castle and from there to the train station at Geisenheim.

Public transport

The easiest way to get to the starting point (the stop at Sonnenlandstraße) is with bus no. 172 (RMV line) from Eltville train station.
