From Oberstein Old Town, the route goes steeply uphill past the church-in-the-rocks to the castle. The church-in-the-rocks is a sacred emblem of Idar- Oberstein. It was built around 60 metres high in the rock between 1482-1484, to atone for a fratricide. From there we hike parallel to the “Nahe- Felsenweg” Dream Loop. The route uses narrow paths via spectacular rock formations to provide great views of Nahetal. After a long incline, there comes a very natural section with beautiful, quiet stream valleys, ancient woods and fantastic views when crossing ranges of hills. Due to its length and some steep inclines, this leg is very demanding. Those wanting to break the journey can find accommodation options via the tourist information. The copper mine in Fischbach is worth visiting and can be reached on foot. At the end of the leg we reach Herrstein with its numerous half-timbered houses from the Middle Ages.

Author’s recommendation

Burg Bosselstein and Schloss Oberstein castles

They are enthroned above the town like two siblings: Schloss Oberstein and Burg Bosselstein. There is an unforgettable view over Idar-Oberstein from the castle’s internal courtyard.

Idar-Oberstein church-in-the-rocks

The chapel, which was built into the rock above the town between 1482 and 1484, houses artistic treasures from past ages. A water source that is still retained in the chapel explains its creation. The German Mineral Museum below the church-in-the-rocks offers one of the most comprehensive mineral collections in Germany. The crystal hall with some overseas exhibits weighing

tonnes and the fluorescence cabinet ensure your visit is unforgettable. The industrial monument to Jakob Bengel is the only original factory with flats and the owner’s home and embodies over 130 years of industrial history in the town of Idar-Oberstein. It is also the birthplace of world-famous art deco jewellery.

Gemstone Adventure World

With surprising and impressive scenery, you will experience the secret beauty of precious stones, crystals and minerals in the caves and grottos of the Gemstone Adventure World. With magical light and colour displays, a secretive landscape of caves is presented with babbling brooks and a fiery, glowing volcano. You can reach all of this in a few minutes on foot.

Oberstein Old Town

In the old town numerous jewellers, grinders, jewellery and craft shops invite you for a visit.

Fischbach copper mine

The mine was one of the most important copper mines in Germany, up to the time of Napoleon. We can visit massive mine caves with a wide network of tunnels and shafts. We can see transparent stalactites and millions of small crystals illuminated by the lights. The mine is maintained in the original state from the Middle Ages. You can also experience culinary delights such as underground wine tasting.

Turn-by-turn directions

Equipment

The Saar-Hunsrück Climb is a natural path that for 65% of its route is on soft forest floor, grass paths or alongside streams. But this special quality can result in problems after long periods of rain, making parts of the route difficult to walk. We therefore recommend wearing sturdy shoes.

Diese anspruchvolle Tour haben wir am 6. April 2015 gemacht.
