The very short, but very varied Side Trail starts at the parking area close to the railway stop Wehr. On a meadow path you hike directly along the banks of the Moselle, upstream. From here, you get a great view of the Wehrer Rosenberg vineyard, through which the path will lead through. At the mouth of the Helterbach, you no longer follow the Moselle, and the path crosses the railway line directly next to the stream. The Side Trail crosses the stream on an old bridge. As the circular route is in the shape of an 8, the two partial circular routes meet here. After the "Helterbachrunde" the path will return here. The path now leads steeply uphill in the forest. You pass the remains of an early medieval fortification and finally reach the road. Be careful when crossing the B 419. After crossing, you will soon reach the forest again and the path ascends moderately. The beautiful path section finally ends in a forest path. Here, you have reached the Moselsteig Trail, which accompanies the Side Trail up to the Helfanter Mühle (Helfant Mill). Here, at the highest point of the entire circular route, you can take a rest on a bench at the edge of the forest. You have a view of the Helfant Mill towards Helfant. In the distance you can see the two towers of the "Helfant Cathedral".
The path now continues along the edge of the forest to the road. The Side Trail and Moselsteig Trail separate here. The Side Trail leads to a pasture fence downhill to the road crossing. This is a truly amazing experience. On large stepping stones you walk through a tunnel under the road, directly in the stream bed of the Spirzinger stream. The stepping stones also allow for crossing the stream. Over a meadow, you continue slightly downhill. Now the section through the wild and romantic Helterbach Valley follows. The path winds through the dense greenery. The trees are overgrown with mosses and lichens and arm-sized creepers hang from the trees. A rest area directly at the water side invites you to take a cool break on hot days.
The lower section in the Helterbach Valley takes you back onto a forest path that reaches the bridge, which you already know. This is where the alpine part of the Side Trail starts. Over ladders, steps and stony paths (partially secured with ropes) the path takes you directly through the vineyards. You quickly gain height and the view of the vineyards and the Moselle Valley becomes even better with every step. The highlight is the viewing pavilion at the highest point, which makes the decision of taking a break very easy.
The rest of the Side Trail is a comfortable hike. It continues gently downhill through the vineyards. Always with a view of the Moselle Valley and the vineyards on the other side of the Moselle towards Luxembourg. If you would like to put up your feet again, you can make use of the provided loungers. Via steps and an adjoining path you quickly reach the railway station stop and the parking area.
