Long hiking tour dedicated to the Roman heritage on the Moselle. Beautiful mix of nature and antiquity. It is not a circular walk, buses and - between May and October - also ships go back.Insights into the hiking tour:menhirs, slate caves, rock pulpit, Roman viticulture ... The Römersteig between Trittenheim and Minheim offers an excellent mix of nature and antiquity. Replicas of funerary monuments or a wine press in the "Piesporter Goldtröpfchen" vineyard tell the hiker about antiquity. Display boards invite the hiker to take a short informative break. The panoramic views from the "Römersteig" down into the Moselle valley are spectacular, while wine connoisseurs who are hungry for movement explore some of the best sites of the Middle Moselle.Refreshments in inns or wineries (Straußwirtschaften) can be found in the villages along the route.

Author’s recommendation

In Neumagen-Dhron the "Stella Noviomagi", a wine ship - based on a Roman original - lies at anchor. Very nice to look at - trips can also be booked.

Turn-by-turn directions

The hiking trail "Römersteig" starts at an ancient menhir, which stands at the height between Trittenheim and Klüsserath. Beautiful views over the Moselle loops are offered on the way through the vineyards down to the wine village of Trittenheim and to the Moselle bridge. On both sides of the new bridge are old ferry towers, the only remaining pair of ferry towers on the Moselle. Barely reached the right bank of the Moselle, a more strenuous stage awaits you. Steeply it goes through the vineyard "Trittenheimer Apotheke" to the slate caves. The rock path to the lookout office high above Trittenheim requires surefootedness. Up there you have time for a short break. The subsequent rather comfortable stretch of the path leads you down to the Martyrs' Chapel in the middle of the vineyards of Neumagen-Dhron. In Neumagen-Dhron, the "oldest wine village in Germany", you pass the wine ship monument and admire narrow alleys with pretty winegrowers' houses.Since 2007 there is a special attraction in Neumagen-Dhron: the replica of a Roman wine ship. The "Stella Noviomagi" - as the ship is called - with a length of almost 18 metres, a width of about four metres, a draught of about 70 centimetres and an empty weight of about 14 tons is the largest floating Roman ship reconstructed in the German-speaking area. In the summer months it invites you to make excursions on the Moselle. Clubs or groups can also charter it completely. Once again you cross the Moselle in Neumagen-Dhron. First of all you continue on the cycle path in the direction of Piesport. A few hundred metres before Ferres, a small settlement on the banks of the Moselle, a steep old vineyard staircase leads you up the slope. You climb up these stairs to the next vineyard path, follow this path a few steps and cross a vineyard until you reach another, higher, unpaved farm track. This leads you parallel to the slope and further through the vineyards. Only when you can look out over the roofs of Piesport do you descend to the banks of the Moselle and visit the reconstruction of the Roman wine press in Piesport. You continue along the banks of the Moselle, past the church of St. Michael and the inviting houses of Old Piesport. Then you climb up the serpentines of a vineyard path to the panoramic road and the Moseloreley. At the Minheim plague chapel you go back down to the banks of the Moselle and on to the wine village of Minheim.
