3x3 Salinental: ClassicTour Rheingrafenstein
The circular trail leads through varied forest and meadow landscapes on partly narrow paths to the Rheingrafenstein ruins and the Gans ice-age rock formation.
On the classic tour you discover the different facets of the Bad Kreuznach city forest with its old oak-beech stand and rustic pine forests. Right at the beginning, the path leads through meadowland and around a dune landscape formed by primeval seas. Along a shady stream bed you reach the Rheingrafenstein ruins, which offer great distant views from the viewing plateau. Another highlight is the rock formation Gans with its alpine character. Here, too, panoramic views await the hikers time and again.

Warning: Oak trees can be infested with the oak processionary moth over large areas. The caterpillar of the oak processionary moth is a health hazard. The stinging hairs of the caterpillars contain a nettle poison. They can also be carried by the wind. Contact with the caterpillars can be harmful to humans and pets. Caterpillar dermatitis is particularly common, with the following symptoms: Skin rashes and redness, slight swelling of the skin, wheals, itching and burning all over the body. If the stinging hairs (which contain thaumatopoein) are inhaled, this can lead to irritation of the mucous membranes of the mouth and nose, bronchitis, asthma or even allergic shock. Even after the life cycle of pupa, caterpillar and moth, the empty webs with their stinging hairs pose a threat over a longer period of time.
Precautionary measures:
- Observe the warning advice
- Infested oak trees should be avoided (do not use seating groups in the vicinity).
- Caterpillars and webs must not be touched under any circumstances (never try to destroy webs yourself)
- Do not lay or sit on the ground in the vicinity of infested oak trees.
- Protect body with clothing (neck, arms)
- Lead animals on a leash, stay on the path
- Report findings: These can possibly be professionally removed with special equipment, endangered areas can be marked.
- If you have come into contact with the stinging hairs of the caterpillars, you should change your clothes and take a shower.
- Clothing must be washed at 60°C minimum

Turn-by-turn directions
From the hike portal, the trail passes briefly through meadowland, then a few kilometres lie ahead through airy forest. Past the exercise trail, the path leads to the forest playground and on to Münsterblick. The trail then descends via large hairpin bends and we cross the Lohrinden path. Then we reach the Porta Nava viewpoint, which offers an impressive view of the rocky narrow valley. Continuing gently uphill and with partly stony ground, the tour approaches the highest point above the Nahe, the Gans.
We continue along the rocky edge for a while, then we are back in wooded terrain. At the former Rheingrafen Castle, our path turns sharp right towards the observatory. Along forest paths and later over stony passages, we reach the Rheingrafenstein ruins with their impressive viewing platform. The descent into the Kehrenbach Valley is then in serpentines with a few steps. From there, the shady path leads very gradually uphill. At the upper end of the valley, we turn left into a sparse forest and reach the stage destination of Meeressand. Now it is not much further to the hike portal.
