Permanent hiking trails are circular routes in particularly attractive areas of Germany with route lengths between 5 and 42 kilometres. As a rule, the varied hiking routes are open all year round and are therefore an attractive addition to the hiking days on offer.

Author’s recommendation

A visit should not be missed. There are various animals, a petting zoo and falconry to discover.

Safety information

The hiking trail is insured against third-party liability claims. There is accident insurance for participants. The insurance cover applies to accidents that occur on the marked routes between the start time and the finish time, provided that the participant is in possession of a valid start card with name and full address.

The hiking trail is passable all year round. The hiking trail is not gritted or cleared of snow.

Tips and hints

The hiking trail is set up according to the guidelines of the German Volkssportverband e.V. (DVV) um IVV and is evaluated for the International Volkssport Badge. With the registration (purchase of the start card) the participant accepts the conditions of the competition.

Start from 9.00 a.m., last possibility to start: 3 hours before sunset. Finish at sunset at the latest.

One IVV-participation rating daily, but always the hiked kilometres (IVV-kilometre rating). If a route is completed several times, the purchase of a start card is required in each case. The purchased start card has to be carried along on the route and the control notes have to be entered. There are two fixed self-checks on the course. The information on the signs of the self-controls must be entered into the designated fields of the start card. The IVV classification stamp will only be issued after the course has been completed if the start card and the classification booklet are presented in person and correspond with each other by name, and if all the control notes are present. The IVV classification stamp will only be issued in the association's own classification booklets. IVV scoring stamps are available daily from 09:00 to 21:00 at the MarienBad. IVV scoring booklets can also be purchased at the MarienBad.

Entry fee: 3.00 EUR, all participants will receive a start card.

Turn-by-turn directions

At the entrance to the MarienBad, cross Bismarckstraße and turn right; 20 m past the barrier, turn left along Basaltpark until you reach the upper entrance to Basaltpark. Here we keep half-left, cross a tarred path and walk uphill towards Hedwigsturm. On a clear day, it is worth making a detour and climbing up. Above the hotel, past the Steig-Rast, we turn left into the wildlife park.

Attention: Separation of routes here:

5 km hikers go right.

10 km hikers keep left.

About 30 m before the Wilhelmshütte, take a sharp left until you reach the corner of a clearing (attention: SK3). We turn right and cross a crossroads. Now we see a factory building, turn right and pass a water treading pool. At the "Sonnenhof" (senior citizens' centre) we go straight on in the direction of the wildlife park. At the wild boar enclosure we turn left, pass the swan pond and then reach a tarred path. We keep left, after 50 m turn right into Berliner Straße. After another 150 m, turn right into "Seniorenallee". Following the signs "Basaltpark/MarienBad" we reach the L293 road. However, we turn right before the L293 into the Basaltpark to the starting point MarienBad.
