Since the 14th century, every Whitsun Tuesday, the youngest bride and groom from Lambrecht lead a billy goat through the forest to Deidesheim's town hall, where it is auctioned off to the highest bidders. With the billy goat, Lambrecht is paying tribute to former grazing rights in the Deidesheim area. High demands are made on the animal, which must be "well horned and well bred", i.e. suitable for breeding. The first mention of the delivery of billy goats dates back to 1404, but in the meanwhile more than six centuries there have been several disputes because the people of Lambrechter did not want to deliver any more billy goats or the people of Deidesheim rejected them because of insufficient physical quality. Even Emperor Napoleon intervened in a dispute in 1808 and decreed in his own hand that the buck had to be "bien cornu et bien capable". In 1857, for example, seven bucks were auctioned off, which Lambrecht had to deliver by court order.

The disputes of that time have been forgotten today and both towns strive to continue the age-old custom amicably in the years to come. Every five years, Lambrecht hosts the Billy Goat Festival, the last time in 2018, on the occasion of the 615th delivery of a historic billy goat. The thousand-year history of Lambrecht flows into the billy goat story in nine pictures on the open-air stage with over 100 performers at the same time.

Author’s recommendation

A visit to the former monastery church of St. Lambrecht. Built from 1320 to 1343, it is considered an art-historically important jewel of the reduction Gothic style in the Palatinate. The monastery church houses a Baroque organ built in 1777 by Johann Georg Geib, which has been preserved almost in its original form.

Safety information

In general:

Especially in autumn, also be aware that leaves lying on the ground can hide bumps, roots, stones or holes in the path. After thunderstorms or rainstorms, trees can still fall over or branches can fall down afterwards. Especially in adverse weather conditions, muddy and slippery passages can occur on natural paths. Not all rocks or precipices are secured with ropes or railings. Surefootedness is required in places. You have to expect this type of path impairment when you undertake a hike. If you are of the opinion that certain sections of the trail are not passable for you, you should avoid them.

We endeavour to announce on this platform any closures that occur due to forestry work or hunting parties. Nevertheless, there are situations where trails are closed and we may not have been informed. If you unexpectedly encounter a trail closure or diversion, please follow the instructions for your own safety.

Deidesheim an der Weinstraße railway station

Turn-by-turn directions

Those who undertake this historic "Geißbockmarsch" on their own can save themselves the associated small detours and follow the markings (Geißkopf or blue/yellow bar) from Lambrecht (Pfalz) railway station to Deidesheim an der Weinstraße railway station, almost all the way:

In front of Lambrecht (Pfalz) station, turn left down the stairs to the B39, turn left again and after the next house there is a slight climb to the underpass/railway line up the stairs to Sommerbergstraße (road above the railway line). Once there, continue along the right-hand side of the road until you reach the top of the Dörrental valley. Continue along the railway line until you reach Lindenberg (Pfalz) and cross the village on its main road. Once in the forest, the trail climbs up to the "Alte Schanz" pass. On the left, parallel to the K16, at the "Forsthaus Silbertal", cross the valley floor of the Mußbach stream and in the next right-hand side valley (Finsterkammer), climb ever steeper to the "Weißen Stich" (refuge, 472 m above sea level). To the left, zigzag into the valley and along the Weinbach stream, past the "Grimmelsbrunnen" fountain to the Waldschänke tavern and on to the edge of the forest. Now on asphalt on a slight incline through the "Paradiesgarten" vineyard and Mühltalstraße (later Deichelgasse and Heumarkt) towards the pointed Deidesheim church tower. At the church, cross the Deutsche Weinstraße and the market square, turn right into Bahnhofstraße. Follow this until you reach the railway station.

For our hiking tours we recommend the following equipment as standard:
  • Sturdy shoes
  • Clothing suitable for the weather
  • Sun and rain protection
  • Sufficient supplies of food and drinks, as there are not always refreshment stops or shops available or open everywhere.
  • Even though the paths are very well marked throughout, it is always advisable to carry a suitable hiking map for safety reasons, so that you can quickly find your way to a safe area in the event of a thunderstorm or emergency, for example.
