If you want to experience the unique flora of the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park at close quarters, this tour is just right for you. The tour lies in the heart of the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park and clearly shows what makes this young national park so special. Ancient beech trees line the wayside, in the ox-break you can discover what a sloping moor is like and on a walk along the meadow passage above the trout farm you can watch ospreys and black storks, which have their home here.

In every season of the year the trail attracts:. In winter it is the view of the moor that is most beautiful at this time of year. In spring, wild daffodils and daphne blossom, transforming nature into a sea of colours early in the year. Summer is butterfly season on the meadows above the trout farm and in autumn there is hardly a better place to "louse" (as they say here, "listen" is meant) to the roaring of the stags during the rutting season.

Author’s recommendation

The end of September is the rutting season of the stags - on the oxen tour you can experience the roaring of the stags up close, depending on the time of day.

Destination

Hiking car park between Börfink and Thranenweier on the K49

Turn-by-turn directions

When you start at the hiking car park on the K 49, you will first be taken back a little into the past - and to a piece of world history in the Hunsrück. The car park is located directly on the edge of the former NATO bunker Erwin. It's hard to imagine what role it would have played during the Cold War if it had been...

But now the tour can really get going - through the forest and a small stretch along the Traunbach. Uphill we go through a beautiful mixed forest to the "Gure Bure". The legend of this healing spring, romantically situated in the forest, is told here, and it is also a nice place for a first rest. Downhill along a beautiful meadow where a special spectacle is staged every autumn: during the rut of the stags, locals traditionally go here to "listen to the stags" - do the same when you come along here in the evening and look forward to a true concert of the rutting cries of our largest forest inhabitants.

Once you reach the crossroads, a detour to Börfink is recommended: after just under 200 metres you will reach the Alte Mühle country inn, which has been prepared to cater for the small and large hungry hiker.

The trail continues along the Traun river and finally meets the second dream loop in this area, the Trauntal-Höhenweg. From here it is only a few metres to the Forellenhof, the second restaurant on the route. A visit here is also interesting because of the large fish farm, the many other animals on the premises and - every spring - the visit of the ospreys, which feed here every year. The birds can be observed ideally from the trout farm and special guided tours are offered.

The Börfinker Ochsentour continues a few metres along the Trauntal-Höhenweg (high-level trail), through the common portal the trail rises uphill. It goes about 300m uphill through a spruce forest. The Börfinker Ochsentour then separates to the right and now follows part of the long-distance hiking trail "Saar-Hunsrück-Steig".  The hike continues over large stepping stones over the Hengstbach stream and further along the edge of the forest to the heights. The trail continues over an open meadow with a view of the fish breeding ponds of the Forellenhof. Here you have the possibility to take a break with a view of the Hengstbach valley. After crossing the road, the trail continues over a meadow to the edge of the forest. (Here there is again the possibility to use an access road to the inn "Zur Alten Mühle").The path climbs up the beech forest with a slight ascent. Once you arrive at the Ochsenbruch, an extensive hillside moor, you can take a break again - just let nature take effect and decelerate. The Ochsenbruch is one of the typical Hunsrück quarries. It is not allowed to be entered, as numerous strictly protected plants and rare animals have one of their last places of retreat here. The moor and its importance for people are explained at the rest area. Here a footbridge runs across the moor - wonderful views and dry hiking boots on this passage are therefore safe.

Now it is just under two kilometres back to the car park. The path runs through a beautiful stand of beech trees, followed by large, old spruces, a torrent ripples down into the valley...

Enjoy the peace and quiet and lots of nature on this hike, which by the way runs largely through the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park.
