Short description:
Somewhat more demanding, but for this a scenic and varied hiking tour through various villages, the vineyards and the Palatinate Forest. The first section takes you uphill on partly narrow paths to Battenberg with wonderful views and then back down into the valley. From Kleinkarlbach there are no more ascents. The rest of the trail runs mainly through vineyards.

From Weisenheim am Berg, the tour leads through Bobenheim am Berg and then uphill to Battenberg. From Battenberg you can enjoy magnificent views of the Rhine plain. The trail continues through the forest back down to Kleinkarlbach. From here you hike a short distance on the Eckbachmühlenwanderweg, past various mills to Kirchheim. Afterwards, the trail leads you through the Golfgarten Deutsche Weinstraße and the village of Dackenheim and on through the vineyards back to Weisenheim am Berg. The paths are only partly paved and not separately signposted.

Author’s recommendation

Once you have reached the top of Battenberg, the "lightning tubes" are worth a detour 80 metres to the right of the road. After the hike, you can stop for a bite to eat in the many restaurants in Weisenheim am Berg.

Safety information

The trail leads for the most part on unpaved forest ground. Watch out for roots, rocks and stones so that you do not lose your footing. On the farm roads in the vineyards, please give priority to agricultural traffic. Due to agricultural use, the paths may be dirty. After rainy days and especially in spring, autumn and winter, the paths can be wet and therefore slippery.

Destination

Weisenheim am Berg, car park in Neumayerstraße

Turn-by-turn directions

From the car park, walk slightly downhill to the end of the village. After the last house, turn left and take the next path on the right to Bobenheim am Berg. You will reach Leininger Straße in Bobenheim via Diebspfad. Here you go right and then turn left into Friedhofstraße. Go straight ahead along the Bergpfad through Bobenheim and turn left after the playground, then immediately right again along the path "Am Krummbach" to leave the village to the north and reach the Krummbach car park.At the information board, take the narrow path next to the vines uphill on the left. Follow the markings 2, 3 and 4 up through the forest and arrive in Battenberg. At the road, you will see the flash tubes below the castle on your right. Walk towards the centre of the village and immediately right towards Battenburg Castle. Then turn left, past the sports grounds. You will now meet the Leininger Burgenweg (marking: black castle on yellow ground), which you follow for 1.2 km until it bends sharply to the right.Turn left here, right at the next junction and then right again at the next crossroads. The path goes steadily downhill. On the left below you, you will see the Eckbach pond next to the road to Altleiningen. The path turns into the Eckbachmühlenweg (marking: stylised mill on a white background). After a few metres, the Eckbachmühlenweg turns left, but you go right, along the Pfälzer Weinsteig for a short distance and then left next to the vines to the road. Cross the road and turn left to the entrance to Kleinkarlbach, then turn right into the village.
On the left side of the road, cross the small bridge and rejoin the Eckbachmühlenweg, which you continue to follow until you reach the railway subway in Kirchheim. After the railway subway, turn right into the village, cross the Deutsche Weinstraße at the car park in the centre of the village and walk eastwards along Bissersheimer Straße until you turn right into Silvanerweg. At its end, continue straight ahead on the unpaved path to the railway tracks, which you follow to the left. The path surface is soon asphalted again. At the crossroads where paved paths turn left and right, continue straight on, now again on unpaved surface through vines. The path turns slightly left - you can already see the Deutsche Weinstraße golf course in front of you - and leads onto the asphalted Kraut und Rüben cycle path. You go right and immediately turn right again into the path through the golf course. At its end, turn left and walk along the edge of Dackenheim. After the wall, you will come to Friedhofstraße. Turn right and you will soon reach Freinsheimer Straße. Cross the Freinsheimer Straße and follow the Herxheimer Straße straight ahead. After the small rest area at the Liebesbrunnenhaus, continue on unpaved ground until you reach the German Wine Road. Please cross the Weinstraße carefully (no crossing aid). Continue straight ahead on the unpaved path through the vineyards until you reach an asphalted farm track. Turn right onto this path until shortly after a power pole, turn sharp left and continue straight ahead, past a refuge, along Dackenheimer Weg to Weisenheim am Berg. Cross the bypass and walk along the main road through the centre of the village. At Bobenheimer Straße, turn right, then left into Jahnstraße and come to the starting point.
