The tour leads from Kallstadt through the vineyards towards Leistadt. Afterwards, the trail follows the same route as the Bad Dürkheim hiking trail "Rocks, Fruits and Fossils", first through the Palatinate Forest, through Leistadt and then through the Berntal nature reserve. You cross the valley incision with its limestone rocks, rich flora and fauna and reach the starting point in Kallstadt via the Rieslingweg.

On this tour, which is particularly suitable for families, you walk from Kallstadt through the vineyards to Leistadt in the Palatinate Forest.  A special feature is the "Rotsteig" weekend house area, with little paradises in the form of cottages with pretty gardens. Continue on to the Berntal nature reserve, above which rises a rocky band of limestone, formed millions of years ago when the region was covered by tropical seas with coral reefs. The hollows used to serve bears as shelters, hence the name "Berntal". Here, amid idyllic vineyards, old fruit trees and lush vegetation, there are many rare inhabitants (rare birds such as the cirl bunting, woodlark and wheatear and a great variety of insects) to discover. Please do not leave the paths. After the Berntal, enjoy the view over the Rhine plain and walk along the Riesling hiking trail (blue stele with a wine glass logo) towards Kallstadt. From Leistadt to the end of the Berntal, the trail logo with the rock deposited in the gallery applies.

Author’s recommendation

The Berntal nature reserve is an event in every season, with its rich flora and fauna.
After the hike, the varied Kallstadt gastronomy is open to you for a stop.
You can also start the tour via the Felsenbergweg from Herxheim am Berg.

Safety information

The route runs partly on so-called farm tracks. These are used for agricultural purposes and are used by tractors and harvesters all year round. We would like to point out that the use of the paths is at your own risk and ask for mutual consideration in the interest of all. The farm tracks may be soiled by agricultural traffic. After rainy days and especially in winter, the paths can be wet and slippery. The paths in the forest run on unpaved forest soil. Watch out for roots, rocks and stones so that you do not lose your footing. On this hiking tour you will walk through the Felsenberg-Berntal nature reserve. Please do not leave the signposted hiking trail. Dogs must be kept on a leash! Please do not take any plants, animals or fruit with you. Please dispose of any rubbish at home or at the nearest rubbish bin.
