Classic hiking trail Ebernburg castle
Half-day tour around the Ebernburg, along the romantic river Nahe, through forest and vineyards with beautiful distant views.
easy
Distance 11.2 km
Ebernburg castle with its 360° panoramic view, the Burgdorf, the path along the banks of the Nahe through the meadow landscape past the Rotenfels massif characterise this tour, as does the ascent into the mixed forest near the village of Norheim up to a plateau that once again offers views far into the North Palatinate mountains. From afar we can see a picturesque castle ruin on a ridge. Forest, meadows, river landscapes, a plateau that makes every tree a character actor, make the hiker's heart beat faster.
Author’s recommendation
Visit the stone sculpture museum. The building was constructed according to the plans of the Japanese architect Tadao Ando. Enjoy a good glass of wine in one of the rustic inns in Ebernburg after the hike.

Safety information
In rainy periods, parts of the path may be affected by wetness. In case of high water in the river Nahe floodplain, please use the cycle path on the old railway line. The diversion is signposted. The critical water levels for accessibility can be found at Hochwasser-rlp.de . The critical levels are Boos from 2.00 metres, Bad Kreuznach from 3.50 metres. From these water levels onwards, the paths become very difficult to pass, you should take the diversions.Warning: Oak trees can be extensively infested by the oak processionary moth from May to August. The caterpillar of the oak processionary moth is a health hazard. The stinging hairs of the caterpillars contain a nettle poison. They can also be dispersed by the wind. Contact with the caterpillars can be harmful to the health of humans and domestic animals. Caterpillar dermatitis is particularly common, with the symptoms: skin rashes and redness, slight swelling of the skin, wheals, itching and burning all over the body. If the stinging hairs (which contain thaumatopoein) are inhaled, this can lead to irritation of the mucous membranes of the mouth and nose, bronchitis, asthma or even allergic shock. Even after the life cycle of pupa, caterpillar and moth, the empty webs with their stinging hairs pose a risk over a longer period of time.Precautionary measures: Heed warnings Avoid infested oak trees (do not sit near them). Do not touch caterpillars or webs (never try to destroy webs yourself). Do not lie or sit on the ground in the vicinity of infested oaks. Protect your body with clothing (neck, arms). Keep animals on a leash, stay on the path. Report findings These can possibly be removed professionally with special equipment, endangered areas can be marked. If you have come into contact with the stinging hairs of the caterpillars, you should change your clothes and take a shower.Wash clothes at a temperature of at least 60°C.Tips and hints

Turn-by-turn directions
From the hiking portal, we approach the castle along vineyard paths. Cross the Ebernburg bridge to reach the courtyard of the castle, which is steeped in history (> exhibition). From up here we have a beautiful view of Rheingrafenstein, Rotenfels and Porta Nava. Now we descend past the Sickingen-Hutten monument down to the Kuna Park on the river. We follow the path along the river bank into the Nahe meadows, the imposing steep face of Rotenfels building up more and more in front of us. Below the Rotenfels we are very close to the porphyry massif. We continue through the Nahe valley on varied paths and through the wide floodplain landscape near Norheim. After crossing the Nahe cycle path, our path leads gently and steadily uphill along pastures and through forest. At the top, we reach the picturesque Kafelsblick with charming rest hut via a branch path. Comfortable forest paths lead to the Birkerhof. From there we go downhill on meadow paths and along the vineyards. At the stone sculpture park of the Fondation Kubach-Wilmsen with its architecturally outstanding museum, we again enjoy the magnificent view of the Rotenfels. We return to the hiking portal via meadow paths.
