Johann Michael Stumm (1683-1747), son of the Sulzbach blacksmith Christian Stumm became a famous organ builder. It was the beginning of an organ building tradition that spanned over six generations. On the STUMM organ trail you can find STUMM organs in Rhaunen, Sulzbach, Hottenbach, Schauren and Stipshausen. Note: An audio library has been specially set up for the STUMM-Orgel- Weg, which makes it possible to experience the organ sounds even if the respective church is closed and/or no organist is present. It is advisable to download the tunes before the hike, as Internet connections are not available everywhere. https://www.idar-oberstein.de/cloud/s/4kNpD7rPdwECz6g

The path offers numerous views over the Soonwald and the Idarkopf. In Sulzbach, the Protestant church with STUMM organ and the small quaint museum STUMM-Stube is located directly on the way.

In 2017, organ building and organ music were recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. https://www.unesco.de/kultur-und-natur/immaterielles-kulturerbe/immaterielles-kulturerbe-weltweit/orgelbau-und-orgelmus

Turn-by-turn directions

At the start at the car park at the Idarwald open-air swimming pool we reach after 300 m the STUMM organ portal on this side of the Rhaunelbach stream, already visible from the car park. Over the bridge, past the fishpond, we meet the "STUMM-Orgel-Weg", keep left after the recommended walking direction and after a few hundred metres we reach the village of Rhaunen. Through the streets "Bauernmühle" and "Am Sonnenschlicher" we reach the junction of the district road. We follow the Kreisstraße/"Salzengasse" for a few meters and reach the turn-off "Ortsmitte Rhaunen".If the centre of the village is not yet our destination, we cross the Kreisstraße at a suitable point to turn right into the forest on the opposite side in the bend. We follow the Lingenbach valley uphill and after 500 m we reach the Jewish cemetery. We walk up the path on the left and leave the valley, leave the forest and shortly after reach the main road. Crossing this, we reach the wooden footbridge in the Näsbach valley via field and meadow paths, which is followed by a narrow path through a rising section of forest. We meet a forestry track and walk past a rest area and a former slate quarry. We follow the path up the valley and enjoy the view into the meadow valley of the Näsbach. At the next fork in the trail we stay on this path. After about 200 m you have to be careful. We leave the path and turn left into a path leading through beech trees. After leaving the forest and crossing the county road, we reach the viewpoint "Soonwaldblick". Here a bench invites you to rest. At the same time, at this point there is the possibility to follow an access road to Bollenbach on the opposite side of the path. Turning off we follow the meadow path and after a few hundred metres the path leads us down to Sulzbach. We follow the road "Bollenbacher Pfad", walking straight ahead we meet the "Kirchstraße", keep to the right and reach the Protestant Church with STUMM organ and the small museum "STUMM-Stube" with a lovingly assembled exhibition about the "Stumms". (Visit of the church and STUMM-Stube only by appointment). We cross the main street, follow the street "Zum Hügel" and go straight on to the "Heuchelheimer Weg".At the end of the village, the route runs parallel to the tarred farm track along the field woods to the historically significant "Heuchelheim". There we can once again enjoy the view: to the Soonwald and, on a clear day, to the Donnersberg. The recreation area with a refuge offers the possibility to rest and children can let off steam. The use of the barbecue area is subject to permission and a fee. After Heuchelheim we walk on "highest" level first over meadow paths, later through a spruce stand towards Hottenbach. After about two kilometres in a zigzag pattern we reach the edge of the forest, look out over Hottenbach, enjoy the view, see the tower of the Wildenburg and the Erbeskopf. If you want to, you can find an unsignposted way into Hottenbach. The access to Hottenbach is officially signposted (orange markings) only after a further kilometre after crossing the district road between Hottenbach and Rhaunen. Past the official turn-off to Hottenbach, turn right onto a meadow path along the forest. After 400 m the path follows the edge of the forest or a tip - we follow the meadow path for another 100 m and enjoy the view of Idarkopf and Stipshausen.Back to the trail markings: We walk along the forest and reach the vantage point "Idarkopfblick" with a seating group and sensory bench, which invite you to take a break. We have completed two thirds of the route. If you decide to make a detour to Stipshausen, leave the STUMM-Orgel-Weg at the next crossroads and after 3.5 km (the route is then approx. 2 km longer) follow the orange-yellow signposts to the dream loop STUMM-Orgel-Weg. If you don't want to do this, follow the path along the edge of the forest, cross a tarred farm track and after another 200 m turn left into the forest and enjoy the forest passage. After 100 m the path follows the ridge on the right and shortly after that turns left into the Rhaunelbachtal. Passing a shelter we reach a bridge over the Rhaunelbach, change sides and enjoy the meadow landscape. After a few minutes we change the side of the brook again, can take a rest area with a bench for senses and let the Hunsrück landscape take effect on us for a while.

Equipment

Hiking boots required! Our tips for carefree hiking pleasure:Hiking is the perfect sport. With the right clothing and the right shoes it is twice as much fun. Functional clothing, poles and breathable rucksacks are comfortable when hiking. But good shoes are indispensable. Sturdy jogging or leisure shoes are only suitable for short distances on level paths at best. For longer distances we recommend sturdy hiking boots with non-slip soles. Also remember to bring sun protection and a drink. One litre of water is ideal.
