IMPORTANT NOTE: Due to the current corona situation, it is absolutely necessary to walk the dream loop ONLY IN THE RECOMMENDED DIRECTION to avoid encounter traffic!  Almost always in view: The Idar forest with the Idarkopf towering above everything. The dream loop Via molarum (road of the mills) provides the hiker with interesting facts about the work of the mill companies and the "Roman past" of the region. Along the way, dreamy paths, magnificent views and several opportunities to stop for a bite to eat await you.

In former times, there were numerous mills on the Hirschbach, Idarbach and Altbach, one or the other of which still exists today. They are used as dwellings, barbecue huts, restaurants or accommodation. On the outskirts of Wahlenau, next to a rest area with a fabulous view of the Idarwald, is the Wahler Mühle restaurant. Mighty beeches stand at the beech square behind Wahlenau. The partly dead tree giants give the scenery something mystical. After crossing the forest, another panoramic view opens up to the Idarkopf. Shortly before the Reitzenmühle, which is privately owned, the trail turns into the Idarbach valley. A little later we leave the idyllic stream valley and climb up Marktwieser Berg. On your way to Horbruch you pass with some distance the Hockenmühle, which offers guest rooms. Since the bridge over the Altburg to the Historic Castle Mill is currently closed, a detour has been set up locally via the Weylandsmühle, which offers refreshments and overnight accommodations under the name "Romantikmühle". From the hiking trail you can also see the Emmerichsmühle (also offering overnight accommodation). The "Marienmühle" can be rented as a barbecue hut.

Turn-by-turn directions

In the centre of Horbruch we start our hike on the dream loop "Via molarum", which we will do clockwise. We cross the main road and walk along the Kleinicher Weg to the edge of the village, where we turn right. Shortly afterwards we take the first dirt road to the left and head for the nearby edge of the forest. There we turn right and enjoy the view towards Hirschfeld. After 1.4 km we turn right, cross the small Hirschbach stream and at the next crossing we turn right towards Hirschfelder Grillhütte. As soon as we have passed this, we cross the K 73 on the outskirts of Hirschfeld and walk straight on.

At the beginning of the trail in the Hirschbach valley, we are accompanied by trees and shrubs, but no sooner have we passed the access path to the monument to the Hunsrück painter Karl Friedrich Ströher than we are surrounded by wide, open fields.

After 2.9 km we come to an asphalt road, which we follow down to the right to the nearby Wahlenauer Bach. No sooner have we crossed the stream than a path on the left leads us into a small wood where a bench invites us to take a relaxing break in the greenery. A little above we meet a dirt track and turn left. But be careful, it doesn't take long until the "Via molarum" turns right uphill to the wood. The stay in the forest lasts only a short time, then we reach a beautiful view of Wahlenau at the edge of the forest, where there is even a bench for the senses.

After a short rest we follow the Logos downhill again to the valley path, where we turn right and walk to nearby Wahlenau. There we are greeted by a large rest area where a path turns uphill and after 4.4 km brings us to the first mill of the day. At the "Wahler Mühle" (where you can get small refreshments and refreshments) the "Via molarum" turns right and leads us quickly past gardens to the eastern edge of Wahlenau. We also pass a small car park in the centre of the village, which can be used as an alternative starting point.

At the edge of the village we pass a small left-right offset on a road and then walk parallel to the K 73 until we reach the first dirt road, which we follow to the right. At the next field path we keep to the left before we turn right to the forest after a short ascent. We walk along the edge of the forest to the left until a small wooden portal opens up on the right. Behind it, after 6.3 km, the beech tree place welcomes us for a rest in the green.Afterwards the "Via molarum" leads us over a small hilltop through the forest, before the open field spreads out in front of us again. The Idarkopf looms ahead, while we walk slightly downhill and after a hedge bar we change to the old Roman road on the left. A little later we cross the K 74 and continue along the edge of the forest on an idyllic nature trail until the logos send us to the right at a fork. Soon we arrive at a junction, walk straight on and after a few steps we are accompanied by both the Traumschleife Kappleifelsentour and the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig. Soon we turn left from the wide path and after 8.8 km we reach a bench with a view. Then we dive into the forest and start the partly steep descent into the Idarbachtal valley. We reach this valley near the Reitzenmühle. Here we leave the Kappleifelsentour and the Saar-Hunsrück Climb. We turn right into the Idarbachtal valley, but soon we start climbing again, as the "Via molarum" winds its way up the steep "Marktwieser Berg" along a narrow path. After a significant gain in altitude, we leave the forest and turn left onto an almost flat path along the edge of the forest. Soon the "Via molarum" leads us back into the forest, where the descent to Krummenau begins. Passing a great vantage point and resting place, we master the descent, which is partly challenging, in parts running over a rocky ridge (surefootedness required!). When we leave the forest at a rest area on the K 71, the most difficult passage of this tour is behind us.

We follow the banquet to the right and hike along the high fence to nearby Krummenau, where we cross the road and a bridge after about 50 m. After the bridge over the Idarbach river we keep left and also at the following crossroads we turn left and walk to the edge of the village. Where the asphalt ends at a fork, we turn right to the natural monument "Krummenauer Wacholderheide". At the next crossroads we turn right again and walk directly along the heath. We walk around the fenced-in area and gain some height. At the top we can enjoy a beautiful view. In the forest we follow the logos downhill to the right, pass some rocks and come to a small stream. We cross the stream and ascend to a meadow, which we also cross. On the other side, we walk briefly to the left at the edge of the forest. The path descends and we stop at a fork in the road.

Our tips for carefree hiking pleasure
Hiking is the perfect sport. With the right clothing and the right shoes it is twice as much fun. Functional clothing, poles and breathable rucksacks are comfortable when hiking. But good shoes are indispensable. Sturdy jogging or leisure shoes are only suitable for short distances on level paths at best. For longer distances we recommend sturdy hiking boots with non-slip soles. Also remember to bring sun protection and a drink. One litre of water is ideal.

IMPORTANT NOTE WITH THE PLEASE NOTE:
Drought in the forest increases the risk of fireActually, one associates forest fire danger with midsummer. But due to the continuing climate change, the drought in the forests is already becoming noticeable earlier in the year. The lack of rain for several weeks and the dry east wind have dried up the soil and vegetation extremely, so that there is already an increased risk of forest fires.

Therefore the National Park appeals to all guests to observe important rules of conduct:
- Smoking in the forest is absolutely prohibited!
- Do not throw cigarette butts out of the car window!
- Do not light fires or barbecues in and around the forest!
- Keep access roads in and around the forest clear!
- Park vehicles only on the designated paved parking spaces!
- Report any fire immediately to the fire brigade (emergency call 112) or the police!

THANK YOU FOR YOUR UNDERSTANDING AND COOPERATION.
