Holzlandweg
This varied woodland trail can be best explored on a number of days. Almost 37 kilometres long, it leads through dense forests, past bizarre rock formations and alongside bubbling brooks. Picturesque places on the trail offer numerous opportunities for accommodation and refreshment.
Those of you looking for scenic diversity with magnificent forests, romantic stream valleys and exciting paths, will not be disappointed with this trail. In addition to this, the mystical rock formations are a special attraction, many of them looking like make-believe characters - for a correct interpretation, please ask your children. But these are not the only highlights of the path that will motivate your children to enjoy this hike.

Safety information
Despite the well-signposted trail markers along the premium hiking trails, we recommend for security reasons to always have an appropriate hiking map so that, for example when a storm occurs, you can quickly either find shelter or get out of the woods.
Especially in the autumn it is also important to remember that leaves lying on the ground can conceal irregularities, such as roots, rocks or holes in the path. Following storms, trees can have been uprooted or have branches hanging down. Such path impairments have to be expected when using such trails. Especially in adverse weather conditions, it may occur that the trails and paths turn into muddy and slippery passages. Path impairments of this kind have to be expected when you go out for a hike. Not all rocks or slopes are secured with ropes or railings and sure footedness is required. Should you be of the opinion that these are not accessible to you then you should try and get around them.

Turn-by-turn directions
Directly at the train station in Waldfischbach-Burgalben, we start our 37 km tour and follow the trail marker of a red H on a white mirror initially through the village centre and then up to the sportsground. Shortly after we have hiked into the woods, we pass a small rock formation, the Galgenfelsen (the gallow stones). We go even deeper into the beautiful mixed forest and walk on soft forest floor past the Gerstenfels into the romantic valley of the Schwarzbachtal. Here we also encounter the Heidelburg, one of the oldest fortifications in the Palatinate and dating back to the Roman/ Celtic period - a place with a mystical appeal.
The trail makes a wide loop, before we get to know an exceptionally beautiful and romantic stage of our hike. Signs inform us of the details of this rocky path which takes us along a 600 m long rocky ridge where we have to walk over rocks and tree roots. This fabulous hiking experience is something really unusual! At the end of the rock ridge, the trail makes a turn to the left and up to the summit of the 426 m high Dinkelsberg after which we continue walking through the woods to the village of Heltersberg. From the outskirts of the village, the route takes us downhill and we go further along the valley of the Haseltalbach into the adjoining valley of the Hirschalbe. The lush green and quiet meadows with their meandering streams are time and time again relaxing and refreshing so that we can make here frequent breaks.
A wonderful walk between the forest edge and the meadow land takes us up a long slope back through the forest to the village of Schmalenberg. Note the two architecturally-contrasting towers situated in the village. After passing through the village, the trail goes steadily downhill following the cheerfully babbling brook on natural paths and around the mighty Grauhansenfelsen rocks . This rock formation is located in a small forest clearing and the whole environment exerts a magical attraction on its visitors. We continue along the trail which now leads us to the outskirts of Geiselsberg. Here we follow the Lindenstraße and soon reach the promising heights such as the lookout point "Auf dem Ebig". Meadows and fields accompany us along the way as we walk through Steinalben and enter a large forest area with pleasant forest trails. We walk down the gentle slopes of the hillside and soon see the first buildings of Waldfischbach-Burgalben. The train station is not far off and we say goodbye to this impressive hike.
