It was Charlemagne who brought the red wine to Ingelheim - and it can be hiked in its historical footsteps along the Kaiserpfalzweg: On the way are the Aula Regia, Heidesheimer Tor, Saalkirche and the museum near the Kaiserpfalz. Then it goes up into the vineyards. The highlight is the fantastic view from the Mainz mountain down into the Rhine valley. The wineries on the way and the newly opened wine cellar in Nieder-Ingelheim offer, to top it all off, imperial culinary delights for the spoiled palate.
Author’s recommendation
The Menk winery and the Stritter winery are right up in the vineyards, so the hike can be combined with a wine tasting.

Turn-by-turn directions
The starting point of the hike is Charlemagne's imperial palace, where medieval cultural treasures can be admired. A visit to the museum gives exciting insights into the history of the building. The path leads up towards Wackernheim in the vineyards on the Mainzer Berg. From here it goes in a gentle ascent to the Rabenkopf, from where you can enjoy the view over the Rhine Valley. There are two wineries in the vineyards - if you want, you can combine the hike with a wine tasting. From the Carolinenhöhe you have one last view of Ingelheim before you return to the starting point in a gentle descent. From there you can stroll to the wine cellar - for a final stop, a little shopping in the vinotheque or a detour to the tourist information.
