At 9.1 kilometres and only 300 metres in altitude, the Kirschweiler Fortress National Park Dream Loop is easy to hike in a good three hours. Good footwear is recommended because more than half of the trail leads along newly created paths and criss-crosses the boulder dump at the Ringskopf. The trail is marked "untraceable" throughout and can be hiked in both directions.

The scenically varied tour in the eastern part of the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park (https://www.nationalpark-hunsrueck-hochwald.de) impressively shows the beauty of the gemstone region. Highlights of the hike are the quartzite rocks of the Kirschweiler Fortress with its breathtaking vantage points and the former Celtic fortification Ringskopf.

The dream loop is connected to the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig premium hiking trail. Access routes are marked from Hettenrodt and Allenbach.Translated with www.DeepL.com/Translator (free version)

Author’s recommendation

The gemstone workshops in Kirschweiler, which are open to visitors, vividly convey the traditional craft of gemstone cutting.

Turn-by-turn directions

A scenically very varied tour that leads through the middle of the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park. Scenic highlights are the Kirschweiler Fortress, a natural quartzite rock formation with breathtaking viewpoints, the Ringkopf, a Celtic fortification, as well as the old border stone "Dreiherrenstein". Extensive forest passages far away from any traffic noise make the hike a path in harmony with nature.

The dream loop leads through the middle of the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park, the only national park in Rhineland-Palatinate. The forest is the dominant element of the hike. After passing a small forest biotope, you reach the Dreiherrenstein a little later. Since the late Middle Ages, the historical border stone stood between three medieval dominions: that of the back county of Sponheim, the Rhine counts of Kyrburg as well as the dominion of Oberstein. Since 1840, the boundary stone has been in its present location. The stone marked the border between the Kingdom of Prussia and the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg. Between giant trees and dead wood with colorful tree sponges, on a hill at the Ringkopf, lies a Celtic Fliehburg, the dimensions of which are still clearly recognizable. From the edge of the slope a picturesque Hunsrück view to the Idarkopf and various Hunsrück villages.

The Kirschweiler fortress high above the Idarbach - also called Hunschrank or Silberich - is possibly an early historical Celtic cult site. The fortress again offers extraordinary views over the Hunsrück.The trail has a very high percentage of natural paths, ideal for lovers of nature and silence.

Our tips for carefree hiking pleasure

Hiking is the perfect sport. With the right clothing and the right shoes it is twice as much fun. Functional clothing, poles and breathable rucksacks are comfortable when hiking. But good shoes are indispensable. Sturdy jogging or leisure shoes are only suitable for short distances on level paths at best. For longer distances we recommend sturdy hiking boots with non-slip soles. Also remember to bring sun protection and a drink. One litre of water is ideal.

Schöne, abwechslungsreiche Tour durch Nationalpark-Wald. Sehr empfehlenswert!
