The start and finish of the hike is the hiking car park at the PWV hut in Schneiderfeld. The trail marker "white castle on a red background" leads up to the Elwetritsche rocks with great views. From there it goes on narrow paths to the two impressive rock formations witch mushroom and Satansbrocken. After a short time, you can reach the ruins of Neudahn Castle at a leisurely walking pace. It gets adventurous a short time later at the Felsentor, when the path leads through a large hole in the rock down into the Moosbachtal. Along the Moosbach it goes leisurely back to the hiking parking lot or to the PWV hut.

Safety information

Safety instructions

Despite the well-signposted trail markers along the premium hiking trails, we recommend for security reasons to always have an appropriate hiking map so that, for example when a storm occurs, you can quickly either find shelter or get out of the woods.

Especially in the autumn it is also important to remember that leaves lying on the ground can conceal irregularities, such as roots, rocks or holes in the path. Following storms, trees can have been uprooted or have branches hanging down. Such path impairments have to be expected when using such trails. Especially in adverse weather conditions, it may occur that the trails and paths turn into muddy and slippery passages. Path impairments of this kind have to be expected when you go out for a hike. Not all rocks or slopes are secured with ropes or railings and sure footedness is required. Should you be of the opinion that these are not accessible to you then you should try and get around them.

NOTICE:

We endeavour to announce all closures caused by forest works, hunting parties on this platform. Nevertheless, there are situations where hiking trails are closed and we may not have been informed. If you encounter closures or diversions on site, please follow the instructions for your own safety.

Turn-by-turn directions

From now on, you can immerse yourself in the rocky world of the Palatinate Forest on comfortable paths and paths on the newly certified walking trails. One of them is the Neudahn Castle Tour near Dahn. In a maximum of two hours you have hiked the 5.3 kilometers of the circular route and experienced legendary castle history.

Start and finish of the hike is the parking lot at the PWV hut in Schneiderfeld. The trail marker "white castle on a red background" leads in a crisp ascent up to the Elwetritschefelsen, where a magnificent view awaits. On the bench you can take a break from everyday life up here in peace. If you are not afraid of heights, you are welcome to venture a few steps further forward on the rock tongue to get a clearer view of the surrounding mountains.

About 300 meters high is the so-called Kauert ridge, over which it continues from the Elwetritschefelsen on narrow paths. After about two kilometers of walking you reach the two grotesquely shaped bunter sandstone rocks Hexenpilz and Satansbrocken. In the Dahner Felsenland there are still some such impressive table and mushroom rocks, around which legends, myths and legends are entwined. So also around the ruin Neudahn, which after a leisurely hiking pace appears after a short time. Neudahn Castle is said to have been built around 1240 AD and is the fourth of the Dahn Castle Group. Several times in its history, the castle was destroyed and rebuilt. Today, the two restored battery towers with a height of 24 meters can still be seen and accessible via a stair tower.

Likewise, a small bastion and parts of the upper castle are preserved. Nothing stands in the way of an extensive exploration of castles. If you take a closer look, you can see spectacle and mouth loopholes on the outside of the masonry of the towers.

It remains adventurous on the Castle Neudahn tour, because after the The castle tour takes place on a rocky hollow path. At the end of this section of the path you pass through a huge rock gate on sandy ground. A narrow path leads from here down to the Moosbachtal nature reserve. Past the Neudahner Weiher and the associated campsite it is now the last two kilometers leisurely step along the Moosbach and you can can be found in a completely new landscape. Also a cool freshness of the moist lowlands is perceptible and the resulting changed plant world. After a leisurely stroll, it is now back to the hiking parking lot or to the PWV hut, where a cozy end awaits the hungry walkers.
