IMPORTANT NOTE: Due to the current corona situation, it is absolutely necessary to walk the dream loop ONLY IN THE RECOMMENDED DIRECTION to avoid encounter traffic!

Impressive landscapes, earthy, near-natural forest and meadow paths as well as regional history - a successful mix distinguishes this trail in EdelSteinLand. Along the Steinbach and in the villages along the way, many installed path signs made of different materials and in different sizes can be admired. In Langweiler, a former charcoal-burner's village, you can learn more about the life of the charcoal-burner's trade on information boards. Current information: Due to storm damage, a diversion is currently being signposted on site on a section of the charcoal-burner trail.

Langweiler used to be one of the settlements in the Hunsrück that made a living from the production of charcoal. Not far from the starting point, the life of the charcoal burners is illustrated on display boards. The replica of a charcoal burner's hut can also be seen.Even at the starting point there is an extraordinary view of the Steinbach dam, the Hunsrück heights rising behind it, and the Wildenburg observation tower which towers above everything. Meadow paths lead to a memorial plaque which reminds of the Croppenhof desert. The "Freihof" was owned by the Counts of Sponheim. Refugees were able to find asylum for a limited time in the Freihof. From the former Freihof it is only a few minutes to the Sensweiler lookout point. At a crossroads, the artist Gerd Edinger has created the art installation "Zeit-Raum- Zeit". Seven slate steles of different sizes, positioned in a cross shape, are intended to make the monumental energy of slate that is millions of years old tangible. Along the Steinbach and in the villages along the way, one can marvel at many installed road signs made of different materials and in different sizes.Along the edge of the forest the path leads to the viewpoint "Steinbachtalsperre". The Steinbachtalsperre serves as a water reservoir for the region.

Destination

circular hiking trail

Turn-by-turn directions

We start our hike at the entrance portal in the charcoal burner village Langweiler, where we can enjoy an impressive view of the Steinbach dam and Wildenburg. The trail first follows the Saar-Hunsrück Climb, Germany's most beautiful hiking trail in 2009, then we descend over meadows and cross the K52. Langweiler is on your left and the village of Sensweiler on your right.Over a meadow and a wooden footbridge we enter the forest and cross the Steinbach stream on a wooden bridge, which accompanies us with its splashing sound on the following metres. Over an open landscape we pass the village of Sensweiler and finally reach the memorial plaque of the Croppenhof desert. We continue our way across the fields and meadows and enjoy the beautiful view of the Wildenburg from the Sensweiler vantage point, before we follow the "Köhlerpfad am Steinbach" downhill and finally enter the forest. The path leads along winding narrow paths through the forest until we reach the waterworks of the Steinbachtalsperre in Kempfeld-Katzenloch with a nearby car park for hikers. We turn left into the forest and follow the course of the stream, which we cross on a wooden footbridge. Our path continues along the edge of the forest until we reach a lookout point where we can enjoy an impressive view of the Steinbachtalsperre. We continue along the path through the forest and reach a lookout point with a bench for senses again. On the following stretch we can also enjoy the fantastic view of the Steinbachtalsperre. Then we cross the open landscape again, where we have a beautiful view of the Wildenburg. Uphill we see the villages of Kempfeld and Bruchweiler on the right hand side. We follow the path along the edge of the forest and cross the L162. Then we enter the forest, over a footbridge, until we reach the open landscape again and have another beautiful view of the Steinbachtalsperre.Shortly before we reach Langweiler we enter the forest again and pass thick moss-covered trees until we reach the first houses. In Langweiler we keep to the right and after a few metres turn left. Passing the memorial of the local community, we follow the path which, for the last few metres, leads uphill again on the Saar-Hunsrück Climb. We pass the Klosterhotel Marienhöh and return to the starting point of our hike.

Equipment

Hiking boots required!

Our tips for carefree hiking pleasure:Hiking is the perfect sport.

With the right clothing and the right shoes it is twice as much fun. Functional clothing, poles and breathable rucksacks are comfortable when hiking. But good shoes are indispensable. Sturdy jogging or leisure shoes are only suitable for short distances on level paths at best. For longer distances we recommend sturdy hiking boots with non-slip soles. Also remember to bring sun protection and a drink. One litre of water is ideal.

Parkplatz-Start/Ziel leicht auffindbar beim Wasserwerk.
