As early as the Middle Ages, the landscape of the so-called Idar Plateau was described in documents as "between the forests". Along the way, hikers can look forward to numerous nature experiences: dense forests with winding paths and open meadow and field landscapes. There are vantage points where benches of the senses provide a well-earned break with views of the Erbeskopf, the tower of Wildenburg and the wooded hills of Hunsrück. In between, rippling streams and a gorge with a steep climb. The start of the hike is at the Allenbach Pond with a water treading pool. Afterwards, the historic mill, Allenbach Castle and Allenbach's church with its "Stumm-Organ" are located along the way. The winding, narrow paths lead through the impressive "Eva Loch Gorge".The artist Gerd Edinger has created the installation "Sonnenzeit zwischen den Wäldern" (Sun Time between the Forests) on the edge of the forest above Wirschweiler as a signpost and time object. It consists of a base stone for the night, a second large stone for the day and numerous smaller stones for the hours. The 1 km long Geopark Krahloch provides vivid information about geology, rocks, mining and nature with its stone exhibits and display boards.

Safety information
Hiking boots required! Our tips for carefree hiking pleasure:Hiking is the perfect sport. With the right clothing and the right shoes it is twice as much fun. Functional clothing, poles and breathable rucksacks are comfortable when hiking. But good shoes are indispensable. Sturdy jogging or leisure shoes are only suitable for short distances on level paths at best. For longer distances we recommend sturdy hiking boots with non-slip soles. Also remember to bring sun protection and a drink. One litre of water is ideal.

Turn-by-turn directions
We start the hike at the Allenbach Pond and walk through the idyllic village along the German Gemstone Road past the historic grain mill, Allenbach Castle and the church. We leave the houses behind us and walk above the Hohlbach stream past paddocks towards the forest. After crossing the L162 we approach the "Eva-Loch-Schlucht" (Eva Hole Gorge). We cross the gorge on winding, narrow paths uphill and reach the open field at the top. A wonderful view and the inviting sensory bench are rewarding for the ascent. Along the edge of the forest we walk to the sports field of Wirschweiler - another entry point of the dream loop. Now the path leads again on narrow paths through forest sections, past another sensory bench, until we finally hit the open field again. Here the view opens up to the impressive landscape of the region. The trail now heads downhill towards the Krahloch Geopark. On the left hand side you can see the community of Sensweiler before you cross the Deutsche Edelsteinstraße / L162. Part of the way leads over the Saar-Hunsrück Climb. A bat cave and another sensory bench also await us on this section. The Krahloch Geopark with its stone exhibits and display boards provides vivid information about geology, rocks, mining and the natural environment. We pass the roofing slate mine and the construction of fox and badger. Then we turn right over open meadows into the forest. On narrow paths the path now leads through dense branches until we leave the forest again. We cross the road towards Wirschweiler and walk on a section of the "Naturpfad Idarbach" towards Allenbach. The splashing of the Idarbach follows us to the first houses in Allenbach. In Allenbach the dream loop leads us once across the village towards the pond, where the hike comes to a crowning end. The Allenbacher Weiher invites the hikers to linger and while treading water in the treading pool, tired feet can recover from the impressive hike.
