On the footsteps of the Treidler (workers who used to lead horse carriages) you can discover one of the few internationally-protected and ecologically intact meadowy countrysides. The trail takes you along the Michelbach, past yellow iris fields, grass and reed beds. The numerous fish ponds, home to water lilies, offer an enchanting sight. Enjoy a picnic at one of the stops along the way and enjoy the peace and quiet of the Auewald. Continue to follow the Treidler  along the River Rhine. Before the invention of the steamship, boats  had to be towed up river by boatmen since the 8th century either with or without animals to help them. A special feature of the Rheinaue wetlands are the wild grapevines which still grow here, one of the culturally significant plant species in the  Palatinate . You could also be confronted with pheasants whilst wandering  under the willow trees, poplars, ash trees and elm trees along the way.

Wanderparkplatz, Rheinstraße in Hördt

Turn-by-turn directions

The walk starts at the Wanderparkplatz in Hördt, near the information board. Here we turn right, into the "Rheinstraße." Passing the Bauhof , we go in the direction of the nature reserve "Hördter Rheinaue". After a few metres, we reach a bridge across the Michelbach  which leads through a veritable water wilderness. Directly afterwards, the road forks off to the  left and we continue to walk alongside the Michelbach. At the end of the road, there is a crossroad. Here we continue straight ahead along an  earthy forest path. The forest now gets increasingly wild, with swampy places to be seen along the  wayside. At the next junction, we continue walking straight ahead along the earthy path  ignoring any other paths off to the left or right.

Having reached a hiker’s pavilion, we cross the intersection and continue straight ahead. Finally, we arrive at a wide forest road, which we follow to the right. After about 200 metres, we reach  a large intersection in the middle of the forest and turn left.  At a small lake we continue going straight ahead, and will see, on the left-hand side, a large expanse  of water. We continue our hike above this unique natural paradise now going straight through the Auwald. Then our route makes a small bend to the right, leaving the Auwald  and ultimately reaches an open cornfield. Here we turn left and walk along the side of the field until we get back into the forest.

Whilst on the left-hand side the large expanse of water is hidden from our view by an earth wall , we pass fishpond after fishpond on the right-hand side of the trail.

All of a sudden, a small lookout point looks over the previously hidden expanse of water.

Finally, we arrive at a tarmac pedestrian and bicycle path that runs slightly raised along the embankment and continue for another 400 metres to the right.

At a crossroad we leave the tarmac path, turn left and follow the dirt track back into the swampy Auwald. After a few minutes we reach the River Rhine and walk for some time along its magnificent river

bank off to  the right. We leave the riverside path on the second junction back into the Auwald. Straight ahead we meet again the combined walking and bicycle path. We go directly up onto the top of the high dike and walk straight along enjoying the sights of the Altrheinarm on our right. After a few metres, a left turn appears at the edge of the forest. We leave the dike, cross the hiking and cycle path and follow this path back into the forest. On a broad forest track we continue until we reach a major crossroads of four paths where we turn right. A bridge leads us over the Michelbach, after which we leave this oak and elm tree forest. Through a landscape of large fields we continue our way until, after about 300 metres, we reach a crossroad and turn right. In the middle of the open fields, we suddenly see a magnificent flooded gravel-pit, lined with reeds.

Directly behind the gravel-pit there is a fork in our path. We continue straight ahead into a small grove . Soon we come out again on the meadows and fields, and arrive  - near the forest - at another crossroad.

We continue straight on along a belt of orchard trees, towards the village.

On a tarmac path, we finally turn off to the right and walk straight past meadows and fields until we reach a grove of trees. Here we turn left and continue along the bank of the Michelbach, now hidden behind the trees. At the end of the path, we turn left to arrive, shortly afterwards, at the parking lot again.

Hallo. die betreffende Tour öffnen, rechts unten Feld „Mehr“ tippen und von der angezeigten Vorschläge „offline speichern“ antippen. Sollte dann die Tour automatisch speichern. Vorteil man braucht dann keine Internetverbindung z.B. Wald für die Karte (GPS)

Auf den ersten Blick wirkt die Tour so unscheinbar, aber was einen auf den 12 km erwartet, ist wirklich toll. Sobald man in die Auenlandschaft eintaucht, fühlt man diese Ruhe und es riecht es einfach nach purer Natur. Wir hatten sogar Glück und konnten den Duft von Bärlauch erleben. Diese Tour ist auf jeden Fall einen Ausflug wert.
