The name of the trail refers to the rugged, wildly jagged rock formations of the lower Kellenbach Valley combined with an exceptionally diverse fauna and floral community, some of which are very rare.

The hiking trail “Felsengarten” offers both sweeping panoramic views of the hiking region on the Nahe and a small-scale, richly structured landscape. The “Rock Garden” section of the trail, which is unique in Rhineland-Palatinate with its geology, flora and fauna, deserves a special mention.

Thanks to the clever routing, the trail offers hikers wonderful views of the deeply gorged, rugged Kellenbach Valley and the mildly shaped Nahe Valley over a short distance. The view of the mighty, forested ridges of the Hunsrück is almost limitless. No less impressive is the flat, predominantly agricultural Northern Palatinate Mountains with the towering Donnersberg at the hiker’s feet.

Destination

Protestant church next to the historic town hall in, Fronhofstraße, 55618 Simmertal

Turn-by-turn directions

The hike takes its starting point at the oldest town hall in the local area, the historic town hall of Simmertal dating from 1499. Today, the municipality accommodates a natural history museum with a palaeontological collection of the Hunsrück region in the town hall. We walk past old ruit trees and allotments in the Apfelbach Valley and reach a shady, structurally rich forest on our way. Passing an old quarry where volcanic rock was once quarried, the Braunenberg offers us a unique panoramic view of the Nahe region. Along hedges populated by songbirds, beautiful views of the landscape open up again and again. At Habichtskopf we have reached the highest viewpoint at 425 m.

At the Randhahn’s Ruh hikers’ car park, we cross the Apfelbach stream on our hiking trail and follow the district boundary between Simmertal and Horbach, marked by remarkable old boundary stones. We then hike through the species-rich semi-arid grasslands in a coppice forest and hedgerow landscape of the Vogelsberg. The hiking trail now turns north towards the tranquil village of Horbach before we approach the highlight of the hike, the “Felsengarten”.

The section that now follows with viewing pulpits in an exposed position along the Simmerbach Valley can undoubtedly be described as the crowning highlight of the trail. From the Falkenstein, Uhuwarte, Rabenkanzel and Felsenköpfchen viewpoints, a breathtaking view of the Simmerbach Valley opens up, with its unusual, southern European flora. The Falkenstein refuge invites us to take a prolonged break. The entire lower Simmerbach Valley is designated as a flora-fauna habitat conservation area and bird sanctuary. The strikingly green-coloured slate rocks in the area of the Rabenkanzel are among the oldest rocks in Rhineland-Palatinate. Finally, the hiking trail leads us through disused vineyards, old fruit trees and hedge land to our starting point, the village of Simmertal.
