Vitaltour Um die Wüstung
The OFFICIAL route description - The scenic, idyllic and quiet walk “Around the deserted” leads over large sections through a valuable so-called open landscape.
Starting at Bockenauer Schweiz, the path leads us through the forest towards Daubach. The view from the “Weih” viewpoint sweeps over the village and a small-scale cultural landscape. Cattle pastures, arable farming and diverse biotope structures shape the colourful landscape.

Turn-by-turn directions
From the “Bockenauer Schweiz” car park after a short distance we walk along the Ellerbach stream over a gradual ascent to the ridge of “Bockenau Woods”. On a path through the high forest, we experience an impressive and individual trail through the middle of the forested terrain ridge. South of the village of Daubach we leave the forest and reach open terrain. The view from the “Weih” viewpoint stretches over Daubach and to the surrounding mountain ranges of the Soonwald. Along the district road (K 22) we now reach Daubach. The small settlement is characterised by a few agricultural estates and is popular as a residential location. We keep heading west and our path takes us further along the Daubach Valley, an idyllic meadow valley. Shortly before the Eckweiler church, the direction of our path changes and leads us northwards. After a short yet steep climb, we cross the K 24. The hiking trail now leads us along the wire mesh fence of the former military site Pferdsfeld.
With a view from the “Auf dem Eckweiler Berg” viewpoint to the surrounding villages, which are harmoniously integrated into the landscape, the trail leads down in a southerly direction into the romantic Tonnenbach Valley. The alley-lined path takes us to Winterburg. Through the narrow village in the valley bottom, we reach “Winterburg Castle” on our way via a steep ascent with steps. A sublime feeling sets in as you look out over the landscape. After a steep descent to the Ellerbach Valley, the trail climbs back up to the “Hahn” viewpoint. After another steep descent and ascent with the “Schlicht” viewpoint, we reach the next mountain range “Am Meerhölzchen”. After the challenging section of the trail, we are rewarded by impressive distant and close-up views. Deciduous forests accompany us on our path, and lead us past imposing rocky outcrops. The crest of the ridge now runs across an open landscape. Back in the forest, the path continually reduces in height. Along a sunken path, which in past centuries was used by the people of Allenfeld to go to church at the former monastery near Bockenau, we return to our starting point and the “Bockenauer Schweiz” restaurant.

Our tips for carefree hiking fun
Hiking is the perfect sport. With the right clothes and shoes, it’s twice as much fun. Functional clothing, poles and breathable backpacks are good choices when hiking. But good footwear is indispensable. Sturdy jogging or leisure shoes are at best only suitable for short distances on flat paths. For longer walks, we recommend sturdy hiking boots with non-slip soles. Also remember to take sunscreen and a drink. A litre of water is best.
