A scenic and varied tour through the vineyards between Freinsheim, Erpolzheim, Bad Dürkheim and Kallstadt. Along the way, the Michaelskapelle chapel and the remains of the Weilberg Roman vineyard in the south of Kallstadt are historical witnesses of various eras, and the Dürkheim giant barrel is one of the region's most bizarre attractions. There are no notable climbs along the way. The paths are partly natural, but mostly paved. The tour is not separately signposted.

Author’s recommendation

During and after the hike, you can enjoy the varied gastronomy in Kallstadt and the refreshment options in the town of Freinsheim. In Freinsheim, you can also join a city tour through the historic old town and along the city wall using our interactive tour with video and audio information via smartphone. Public guided tours of the town take place every Friday at 6 p.m. and every Saturday at 11.15 a.m. from April to October.

Safety information

The route often runs along so-called farm tracks. These are used for agricultural purposes and are used by tractors and harvesters all year round. We would like to point out that the use of the paths is at your own risk and ask for mutual consideration in the interest of all. The farm tracks may be soiled by agricultural traffic. After rainy days and especially in winter, the paths can be wet and slippery.

Turn-by-turn directions

The walk starts at the tourist information office at the historic town hall of Freinsheim. Walk diagonally opposite into Breite Straße, then turn right into Haintorstraße. Cross the Haintor and immediately turn left into Friedhofstraße. Follow this out of town up the small hill towards the cemetery with its distinctive fortified tower. From there, walk downhill through the vineyards towards Erpolzheim. You pass the rainwater retention basin and continue straight ahead on the unpaved path. Before the first houses, turn right and walk north along Erpolzheim. At the railway tracks, turn left towards the station. At the station building, cross the railway tracks and walk westwards on the asphalted farm track (towards the Palatinate Forest). The large erratic blocks (Gemarkungssteine) along the way are ideal for a short rest. The path continues straight ahead to the road between Freinsheim and Ungstein (L455), which you cross (attention: no crossing aid). Continue straight ahead on the first paved then unpaved farm track through the vineyards towards Kallstadt (orientate yourself at the radio mast) and come to the car park at the southern end of the village.Turn left there, left again after the farm and then right again and continue downhill to Gundheimer Gasse and the Ungsteiner roundabout. Cross the roundabout straight on and after a good 100 metres turn right into Altenbacher Straße. You pass Wolfs Brunnen and turn left at the Bärenhof winery. Before the Pfeffingen winery, turn right, cross the road and then keep left at the turnoff halfway up the hill. At the top you reach a crossroads where you turn left and after 200 metres you pass the Michaelskapelle. From the chapel, walk downhill to the Wurstmarktplatz with Dürkheimer Riesenfass, Saline and access to the Kurpark.Return via Sachsenhütter Straße (next to the petrol station) and leave Bad Dürkheim heading north. At the car park, turn right up the slope into the vineyards and return to the crossroads you reached from the other side on the way there. This time turn left and walk in a moderate up and down, always straight ahead on a ridge of hills to the north. When the hiking trail touches the road again, turn right. You pass the Roman wine press house and can already see the excavation site of the Roman winery above on the left. At the winery, follow the signpost towards Kallstadt. You are now walking along the Palatinate Almond Trail, which leads to Kallstadt along the same route as the Saumagen and Riesling trails (markings: almond blossom, Saumagen, wine glass). You come to the church and the tourist information office in the centre of town. Cross the Weinstraße, go into Neugasse and then immediately turn left into Schlittweg.  At the end of the path, turn left and follow the Burgunderweg (marked: Fass) northwards, turn right at the Schlittgraben and now follow the signs to Freinsheim. You pass the Oschelskopf statue with a resting place and reach Freinsheim via the railway overpass at Holzweg. Here you go straight on via Herxheimer Straße and Bahnhofstraße into Hauptstraße and are soon at the starting point in the historic old town.
