Short description:

The Musikantenbuckelweg is located in the north-east of Freinsheim. This trail follows the footsteps of the "Mackenbacher" musicians. These itinerant musicians from the Western Palatinate stopped off in Freinsheim on their travels, which took them as far as overseas, and serenaded the residents. On the way, you will pass Roman sarcophagi that were found during earthworks in the Freinsheim area.

Author’s recommendation

After the hike, you can stop off at one of the many restaurants in the town of Freinsheim. You can also take a city tour through the historic old town and along the city wall using our interactive tour with video and audio information via smartphone. Public guided tours of the town take place every Friday at 6 p.m. and every Saturday at 11.15 a.m. from April to October.

Safety information

Our hiking and cycling trails often run along so-called farm tracks. These are used for agricultural purposes and are used by tractors and harvesters all year round. We would like to point out that the use of these paths is at your own risk and ask cyclists, hikers and winegrowers for mutual consideration in the interest of all. The farm roads may be soiled by agricultural traffic.

After rainy days and especially in winter, the paths can be wet and slippery.

Turn-by-turn directions

From the historic town hall, walk along the main road in a westerly direction and then turn right into Dackenheimer Straße. Follow this road until you reach the roundabout at the end of the town. Take the subway and pass the sports field on the left (signpost: Coreten steel stele with a sawn-out symbol of a wandering musician). Follow the farm track straight ahead for approx. 1.3 km. Then turn right onto the unsurfaced road. After 600 metres, this leads you to a green area with trees. Walk downhill to the right along the wall (there is a nice rest area with benches and a table on the left above the path) and you will see the Roman sarcophagi on the right above the path at the end of the wall. The path itself bends to the left and then immediately goes right again for a few metres along the ditch. At the next crossroads, keep left and you will reach the vineyard garden at the Musikantenbuckel before the road.  Cross the road below the vineyard garden (note: no crossing aid) and continue straight ahead for about 400 metres. Now turn right and follow the farm track southwards until you reach the road. Turn right again through the vineyards, cross the connecting road between Freinsheim and Großkarlbach again and continue straight ahead. Before the third farmhouse, turn left and walk towards the road. Turn right and follow the cycle path and footpath alongside the road until you reach the subway at the sports field. From there, take the same path back to the old town that you used on the way there. Way from the station: From the station, turn right into Bahnhofstraße. Immediately after the town hall of the Freinsheim municipality (number 12), turn right into Friedrich-Bruch-Straße above the pharmacy to reach Dackenheimer Straße. From there, go straight on in the direction of the sports field. Use the pedestrian subway to the football field and walk as described above.

Answered by Jörg Dörr · September 21, 2021 · Zum Wohl.
