An image column made of bird sandstone with the crucifixion scene, probably from the 16th century, gave the Schwarzes Kreuz vineyard its name. The Culinary Hike takes place here at the end of September. At about 20 stops along the way, wines, sparkling wines and juices from the Freinsheim vintners can be tasted. And since good wine and good food belong together in the Palatinate, each stage promises its own culinary treat.

Author’s recommendation

After the hike, you can stop off at one of the many restaurants in the town of Freinsheim. You can also take a city tour through the historic old town and along the city wall using our interactive tour with video and audio information via smartphone. Public guided tours of the town take place every Friday at 6 p.m. and every Saturday at 11.15 a.m. from April to October.

Safety information

Our hiking and cycling trails often run along so-called farm tracks. These are used for agricultural purposes and are used by tractors and harvesters all year round. We would like to point out that the use of these paths is at your own risk and ask cyclists, hikers and winegrowers for mutual consideration in the interest of all. The farm roads may be soiled by agricultural traffic.

After rainy days and especially in winter, the paths can be wet and slippery.

Turn-by-turn directions

From the tourist information office at the historic town hall, turn right into Haintorstraße via Breite Straße. After the Haintor, turn left into Friedhofstraße. Follow this to the cemetery (over the railway tracks) and continue straight on. At the rainwater retention basin, turn right underneath the Rings vineyard and after about 300 m cross under the railway line. Then take the next possible path on the right. This leads not far from the Black Cross statue (late Gothic wayside shrine with crucifixion scene) across the district road (note: no crossing aid). Go straight on and then turn left and pass the Hahnenplatz with its old chestnut trees and turn right to reach the Oschelskopf statue with resting facilities.Continue on and after about 300 metres then turn right and head east along a scenic route back to Freinsheim. Via Holzweg and Herxheimer Straße (straight ahead coming from Holzweg) you return to the main street and the historic old town.

Sehr schöne Wanderung durch Freinsheim und die Weinberge. Ein Rundgang über den Friedhof lohnt sich. Am Ende der Strecke ist der Stadtmauerrundgang in der Altstadt sehr zu empfehlen.
