On this hike through the Felsenberg/Berntal nature reserve and the Saumagen vineyard, we have provided you with information on viticulture and special features along the route in the form of video and audio sequences at a total of 15 locations. You can walk the route using the route description (here the links to the information on youtube are marked as "station") or you can use the official and free tour planner app of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. And this is how it works on site: Start or install the tour planner app , activate the GPS function of your smartphone, select the tour, click on "open in app" and select the map view. Now you can start the tour and always play the audio and video files at one of the symbols visible on the map. So you don't need to look at your smartphone all the time and can consciously experience the hike with your head up.
To get you in the mood, we show you here in the video what awaits you on the way (Station 1).

The hike takes you from the tourist information i-Punkt Kallstadt first in the direction of Herxheim am Berg and then along the upper break-off edge of the Felsenberg, from where you have a magnificent view of the Haardtrand and the Rhine plain. Through the Berntal valley, you return to the rocks at the bottom and then continue through the world-famous Saumagen vineyard. You will pass the "Villa am Weilberg", the remains of a Roman vineyard, and before the end of the tour you can take a virtual look inside the Kallstadt St. Salvator Church. With what we share with you along the way in terms of interesting facts about viticulture, you will certainly be able to choose the wine you have earned as a reward after the hike a little more consciously.

Author’s recommendation

After the vineyard tour, it is worth visiting the wine villages of the Freinsheim holiday region with its diverse gastronomy and dozens of self-marketing wineries. If you enjoy the interactive guided tour with audio and video information, we recommend the similarly designed. Or perhaps you would prefer a forest hike? Ours is a good 10 km long premium hiking trail in the forest area of the villages in the holiday region. This trail is also equipped with additional audio and video information. The starting point is the hikers' car park at the Lindemannsruhe forester's lodge, approx. 4km west of Kallstadt.

Safety information

The path often runs along so-called farm tracks. These are used for agricultural purposes and are used by tractors and harvesters all year round. We would like to point out that the use of the paths is at your own risk and ask cyclists, hikers and winegrowers for mutual consideration in the interest of all. The farm roads may be soiled by agricultural traffic. After rainy days and especially in winter, the paths can be wet and slippery.

Turn-by-turn directions

At the start of the tour at the tourist information i-Punkt Kallstadt, we offer you a video introduction to the hike (Station 1). First follow the Saumagenweg (access between the tourist information and the Platz der 100 Weine, marked with a stylised Saumagen on blue steel stems) through the vineyards. At the rainwater retention basin you change to an unpaved path parallel to the road in this section, the Palatinate Almond Trail (marked: pink almond blossom, station 2). You will receive information about the 5th season in the Palatinate, the almond blossom).
After about 300 metres, halfway to Herxheim am Berg, you will see the entrance to the Berntal valley on the left and the Napoleonsweide pasture on the right (station 3). However, you continue on the unpaved almond path in a northerly direction. The path - now asphalted - climbs slightly in a left-hand bend below the clearly visible Herxheim winegrowers' cooperative. At the fork at the top, you will see the information board on the Herxheim karst cave (station 4) on the right. However, the path itself then leads you to the left and you leave the Mandelpfad. Continue along the paved farm track to the west, looking towards the edge of the Haard with the clearly visible Bismarck Tower and the large telecommunications tower. After about 400 metres, the path bends to the right (station 5 with information on viticulture and wine consumption in Germany). Then take another sharp left and stay close to the edge of the rocky mountain into the Berntal valley and continue walking above along the Berntal valley. After a good 500 metres, keep left (station 6 with information on the grape varieties of the Palatinate) and head towards Leistadt.
At the end of the Berntal, you reach the L517 country road between Weisenheim am Berg and Leistadt. You have to cross the road and walk a short distance parallel to the road to the south. At Weidenhof, use the crossing aid across the road, walk past the car park and then turn left into the Berntal valley. After about 300 metres you will see a seating area halfway up on the left (station 7), from which you can clearly see the rocky outcrop in all its imposing glory. Here you can learn more about the Felsenberg/Berntal nature reserve in which you are walking. At the end of the valley, cross the small bridge and walk up the steps (beware of slipping) that lead you out of the valley.
You are now back in the Saumagen vineyard and walk straight ahead. You orientate yourself again by the blue steel stelae, but this time by the wine glass markings, as you now follow the route of the Riesling path through the vines. You can use the first bench (station 8) to pause for a moment. From here on we will explain the grape harvest by grape harvester. You will pass a small shelter (station 9) and further on you will reach the K4 district road between Kallstadt and Leistadt. Leave the Rieslingweg and keep left, walking parallel to the road downhill towards Kallstadt.
Cross the road at the rainwater retention basin (no crossing aid, please pay close attention to the traffic). From here, follow the Saumagenweg (marking: stylised Saumagen) into the vineyards and reach a bench with a beautiful view (station 10).  When the Saumagenweg turns left (station 11), continue walking and immediately afterwards bear right towards the south until you meet the Rieslingweg again and follow it to the left for just under a hundred metres. Then turn right onto an unpaved path and walk towards a bench on the edge of the slope (Station 11). Continue left and pass the Römerkelter (Station 12), then turn left and see the Roman Vineyard, the Villa Weilberg (Station 13). From the Roman Vineyard, follow the Almond Trail again to the left (marking: pink almond blossom) to the north. At the Kallstadter See lake (station 14) you will also meet up with the Saumagen and Riesling trails again. Thus, the wine glass, Saumagen and almond blossom markings will bring you safely to station 15, the St. Salvator Church, the end of this informative hike.
