Author’s recommendation

During and after the hike, you can stop off at one of the many restaurants in the wine villages along the route. In Freinsheim, you can take a tour of the historic old town. You can also experience the city tour interactively on your smartphone.

Safety information

Our hiking and cycling trails often run along so-called farm tracks. These are used for agricultural purposes and are used by tractors and harvesters all year round. We would like to point out that the use of these paths is at your own risk and ask cyclists, hikers and winegrowers for mutual consideration in the interest of all. The farm roads may be soiled by agricultural traffic. After rainy days and especially in winter, the paths can be wet and slippery. Climbing is not permitted in the Felsenberg nature reserve.

Turn-by-turn directions

The hike begins at the village square Weisenheim am Berg directly in the centre of the village. From the village square, turn left into the main road and cross the village until you reach the Kirchheimer Straße intersection (bypass road). Cross the road and take the "Dackenheimer Weg" out of the village straight ahead through the vines. Leave the Schutzhütte on your right and turn right at the electricity pylon.  After approx. 300 metres, turn left onto the second farm track (unpaved). Cross the German Wine Road (note: no crossing aid) and continue straight on towards Dackenheim, passing the rest area at the Liebesbrunnenhaus. Via "Herxheimer Weg" you reach Kirchheimer Straße, which you cross and continue along Friedhofstraße. After a few metres, turn left into "Am Rappengarten" and follow the path along the outskirts of Dackenheim to the golf course. Turn right and cross the golf course until you reach the weeping willow.Turn left and walk north on the Kraut und Rüben cycle path until the next turning for a farm track. Take the unpaved path to the right until you reach a bench with a great view. There you turn right and walk downhill and straight ahead. At the square with three trees, go left downhill along the wall. On the left above the path is a beautiful seating area with a view of Freinsheim. When the path turns left after the wall, you will see Roman sarcophagi in a temple-like hut on the right. Continue along the path, immediately to the right and from now on always along the small ditch and then along the reeds. You are now walking directly towards Freinsheim and come to the Freinsheim bypass next to the Kassner-Simon winery. Turn right, pass the sports field and use the subway to get to the other side of the road. You will reach Freinsheim via Dackenheimer Straße. At the junction with the main road, you have the option of turning left to explore Freinsheim's historic old town (see tip). However, the path continues to the right along Bahnhofstraße to Herxheimer Straße past the small playground to Holzweg and straight on to the railway embankment. You cross the tracks, turn right and find yourself on the hiking trail "Schwarzes Kreuz" (marking: stylised monument), which turns right after about 300 metres towards the viewpoint "Oschelskopf". Here a group of tables invites you to take a rest. You leave the Schwarzes Kreuz hiking trail, turn right and walk down the hill past the Nußbaum with a resting place. Shortly before you reach the German Wine Route, turn left onto the "Burgunderwanderweg" (marked with a blue pole with a red wine barrel) and walk south towards Kallstadt. In front of the first houses, keep to the right and walk along Schlittweg into Neugasse and finally to the German Wine Route in the centre of Kallstadt. Cross the road and walk between the "Platz der 100 Weine" and the tourist information i-Punkt Kallstadt onto the Riesling hiking trail (marking: blue stele with wine glass). Follow the markings towards Herxheim am Berg and walk up the hill on the left at the pond. Then turn right and walk down a natural staircase (be careful if it is wet: danger of slipping) and across a small bridge into the valley of the Felsenberg/Berntal nature reserve. Follow the valley past orchards and limestone rocks to the Weidenhof car park. Here you cross the road, turn right and follow the German Wine Route cycle path (marked with grapes and a wheel on a white background) into the vineyards. The path leads you via Plauser Straße to Weisenheim/Berg. Turn right into Karl-Gayer-Straße and you will reach Leistadter Straße. Here you turn left and come to the starting point at the village square.
