Beautiful wine hike without any major climbs. On the section along the Eckbachmühlenweg, you will pass old mills such as the Haldmühle and Bruchmühle. On your way back, Freinsheim is also a historic town. You should not miss a walk along the town wall (see author's tip). The local recreation area "Ludwigshain" in Weisenheim am Sand concludes the tour. The hike is not separately signposted.

Author’s recommendation

In Freinsheim and Weisenheim am Sand you can stop for a bite to eat during and after the hike. The tour through the historic old town of Freinsheim and along the town wall is worthwhile. Freinsheim's old town and along the town wall. Public guided tours of the town always take place from April to the end of October on Fridays at 6 pm, Saturdays at 11.15 am. Alternatively, you can also experience the city tour interactively on your smartphone.

Safety information

The route often runs along so-called farm tracks. These are used for agricultural purposes and are used by tractors and harvesters all year round. We would like to point out that the use of the paths is at your own risk and ask for mutual consideration in the interest of all. The farm tracks may be soiled by agricultural traffic. After rainy days and especially in winter, the paths can be wet and slippery.

Turn-by-turn directions

The tour begins at the fountain at the Obertor. Cross the road at the pedestrian crossing and turn left into Großkarlbacher Straße. After a few metres you will see the first signs pointing to "Sandhasenweg 1". At the fork after the end of the village, take the dirt road uphill to the right. After the bench, turn left again and rejoin the asphalt path, which soon continues as a wide, but unpaved farm track. Pass the tree with bench on the right, then stay on this path for a good kilometre. At the end of the path, turn left and 200 metres further on, turn right again, heading north towards Großkarlbach. You pass a bench in front of a sandstone wall before you reach the Großkarlbach vineyard hut. In Großkarlbach, follow the Friedhofsweg, keep to the right at the main road and walk to the Protestant church in the centre of the village. Turn left into Kändelgasse and you will come to the mill museum. You now walk to Bissersheim along the Eckbachmühlenweg (marking: wooden signs with mill). In Bissersheim, leave the Eckbachmühlenweg to the left at the Haldmühle and walk along Raiffeisenstraße to Hauptstraße. Turn right there and then left on the other side of the road into Freinsheimer Weg. Follow the path out of the village into the vineyards, always straight ahead. Only turn left when the unpaved path becomes a grass path. The path surface soon changes to asphalt. At the bench with a great view, turn right downhill and continue straight ahead. At the square with three trees, go left downhill along the wall. On the left above the path is a beautiful seating area with a view of Freinsheim. When the path turns left after the wall, you will see Roman sarcophagi in a temple-like hut on the right. Continue along the path, immediately to the right and from now on always along the small ditch and then along the reeds. You now walk directly towards Freinsheim and come next to the Kassner-Simon winery to the Freinsheim bypass, which you cross carefully (no crossing aid). Cross the narrow pedestrian path into the village and turn right into Schubertstraße via Franz-Liszt-Straße, then left into Mozartstraße, sharp right into Wenjenstraße and then immediately left into the 2nd cross street. Via Wallstraße you come to Freinsheimer Hauptstraße and stand in the middle of the old town.
Turn left until you reach the historic town hall, which is also home to the tourist information office. Continue left along Herrenstraße and through the iron gate. After the forecourt of the gate, take the narrow path "Auf der Schanz" immediately to the right and you will come to the baroque garden. You continue straight on, meet Badstraße, into which you turn left. Cross Erpolzheimer Straße next to the petrol station and continue straight ahead along Riedweg out of the village. At the equestrian farm, turn right and join the Freinsheim Blossom Trail (marked by a metal stele with a punched-out blossom), which you follow in the direction of Weisenheim am Sand. Cross the railway line at the level crossing with barriers and then immediately turn left. You are now in the Ludwigshain recreation area and also walk onto the Sandhasenweg 3 (marking: hare with number 3). Follow this path until you reach the lake. After the lake, the Sandhasenweg turns right, but you continue straight on in a northerly direction. The path bends to the right and then you go sharp left, past the first houses and reach Holzweg, which you turn right into and follow until you reach Bahnhofstraße. Turn left, cross the railway tracks at the station and walk along Bahnhofstraße through the village back to the starting point, the fountain at the Obertor.
