In the far west of Rhineland-Palatinate, enthusiastic cyclists will find the Saar Cycle Trail, an attractive cycle path set in charming surroundings, with expanses of woodland, unusual rock formations and sun-drenched vineyards. About 25 km of this route is located within Rhineland-Palatinate. Join this section of the route in Konz, at the confluence of the Saar and the Moselle.

At this point on the route you need to decide whether to cycle along the left or right bank of the Saar. If you go left, you cycle along the Saar Canal; go right and you follow an unspoilt riverside path past Kanzem and on to Wiltingen. These wine-growing villages, with their romantic vineyard setting, offer plenty of chances to rest. In Schoden, you reach the fork in the river which, along with the weir, was created during the building of the Saar Canal. From Schoden, the route continues to Saarburg. The town of Saarburg, with its romantic old town complete with market place and mill museum, and the ruins of Saarburg Castle, are sure to make an impression on you. And lastly, don’t miss the Leukbach waterfall right in the middle of the town.

Next, it’s on to Serrig, a little wine-growing community that has been dubbed the ‘Saar Wine Gateway’. The cycle route continues past the Klause memorial on an escarpment to the left of the Saar and then on to Taben-Rodt. Taben-Rodt’s most notable landmark is St Michael’s Chapel, which lies on a hill and offers charming views of the idyllic Saar Valley.
If you like, you can continue your tour along the Saar via Mettlach to Saarbrücken.
