Author’s recommendation

As a stage destination, Niederzissen also offers more interesting sights: the former Niederzissen synagogue or the bunker in the Lahar.

Turn-by-turn directions

The EIFELLEITER (EIFELLADDER) starts at the Rhine promenade in Bad Breisig and then leads Ladder hikers out of the spa gardens past the Roman thermal baths into the tranquillity of nature.
It’s worth looking back over your shoulder for incredible views of the Rhine valley. Shortly after the ascent, the hike leads through a Celtic hill-top settlement. There are great views of Arenfels castle, Rheineck castle, and to the south, the ruins of Hammerstein castle are visible. The newly designed rest area invites hikers to relax after the first ascent.
The trail continues in the direction of Mönchsheide, which got its name from the cultivation by monks from the Marienstatt monastery in the Westerwald. At the small local airport, you can see many gliders on the weekends, which are pulled up via winch. The estate is a good place to stop for refreshments.
Further along, the Ladder leads up through the characteristic landscape of the Breisiger Ländchen and a game reserve (caution: bringing along larger dogs/strollers is only possible to a limited extent due to a very narrow wildlife gate).
Soon, Waldorf with its picturesque church appears in the field of vision. After crossing meadows, fields and idyllic woodland, the adventure of geology begins at the end of the first stage, a dance on the Bausenberg, Germany’s best preserved horseshoe crater and home to rare plants and animals. A fascinating conclusion to the first section of the Eifel Ladder, which will leave you wanting more.
