The fifth stage of the Pfälzer Waldpfad trail leads us from the Hilschberghaus rest stop past Rodalben and the Birkwieserhof farm for 10km before arriving at the end of the stage in Merzalben.
Distance 10.4 km
From the starting point of the trail, the Hilschberghaus, the trail leads along a rocky path to the Hilschbergfelsen, the Saufelsen and the Vorderen and Hinteren Rappenköpfen. Time after time, the forest contrasts with the landscape of the Gräfensteiner region. During the warmer months, all shades of green compete with the golden-yellow fields and the bright blue of the sky. From the valley of Rodalben you pass the halfway point at Birkwieserhof and follow the curving path over the heights of the Langeberg. With each step the need to rush and hurry disappears as they pave the way for you to come to oneself again. You then cross the main road and aim for the end of this stage in Merzalben. Here in the town centre you will find the "alte Kirche", whose outer wall holds the replica of a Marien grotto. Further accommodation is available in Rodalben and Hauenstein.
Despite the well-signposted trail markers along the premium hiking trails, we recommend for security reasons to always have an appropriate hiking map so that, for example when a storm occurs, you can quickly either find shelter or get out of the woods.
Especially in the autumn it is also important to remember that leaves lying on the ground can conceal irregularities, such as roots, rocks or holes in the path. Following storms, trees can have been uprooted or have branches hanging down. Such path impairments have to be expected when using such trails . Especially in adverse weather conditions, it may occur that the trails and paths turn into muddy and slippery passages. Path impairments of this kind have to be expected when you go out for a hike. Not all rocks or slopes are secured with ropes or railings and sure footedness is required. Should you be of the opinion that these are not accessible to you then you should try and get around them.

Stealing a final view of Rodalben from the terrace of the Hilschberghaus (PWV, opening hours: Mon-Sat from 12pm/Sundays and holidays from 10am), we then continue on curving paths on the slopes above the town, until the descent into the Rodalbe Valley. We reach the farmstead of the old Birkwieserhof farm (1) by following the river through a small side valley. The last section of this stage brings us along more curving forest paths to Merzalben. We pass the church (2), which stands on the left of the main road, and arrive at our final destination at the Zimmerbergstraße junction.
